Augusta, Ga. – Hailed as “shamelessly entertaining” by the Washington Post, the celebrated American Shakespeare Center will present two productions, Macbeth and Measure for Measure, at 7 p.m. in the Maxwell Theatre on Friday, Sept. 24, and Saturday, Sept. 25, respectively, as part of the Augusta State University’s 43rd annual Lyceum Series.

The American Shakespeare Center On Tour is direct from the stage of the American Shakespeare Center’s celebrated Blackfriars Playhouse, the world’s only re-creation of Shakespeare’s original indoor theatre. The troupe boasts nearly two decades of global touring experience, performing Shakespeare’s works in their original staging conditions—on a simple stage, without elaborate sets, and with the audience sharing the same light as the actors.

Shakespeare’s shortest tragedy, Macbeth, is his most unrelenting examination of the dark side of humanity, from the first words of the play until the title character loses his head.. Driven to bloody deeds by their lust for power, Macbeth and his Lady tragically struggle to hold on to their sanity and to each other.

Shakespeare’s electrifying exploration of the arrogance of power in Measure for Measure hovers between comedy and tragedy, as he stares unblinkingly into the way humans confuse lust and love, goodness and self-righteousness.

The productions are sponsored by the Student Activities as part of the annual Lyceum Program. Admission is free with a valid JagCard for faculty, staff, and students. General admission is $10. For more information, call 706-667-4100.
