		<description><![CDATA[Each year Augusta State observes Black History Month in February by hosting a month-long series of events.]]></description>
			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p><strong>Augusta, Ga.</strong>- Each year Augusta State observes Black History Month in February by hosting a month-long series of events to honor the African- Americans who have contributed to America’s history and culture.</p>
<p>Highlighting the month’s activities is a program, Thursday, Feb. 18, at 7 p.m. in 170 University Hall, by Dr. Mallory Millender, former Paine College professor, on <em>America’s Debt to Haiti</em>. Dr. Millender has written several articles including <em>Haiti: African-American Contact to 1960</em>, which was published in the <em>Journal of Caribbean Studies </em>in 2005. He is a former first vice president of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP). The Alabama native has also served on the board of the directors for the American Red Cross and the Sickle Cell Center.<span id="more-2049"></span></p>
<p>Witness the Civil Rights Movements from 1954-1985 in the award-winning documentary series, Eyes on the Prize. This film series will be presented on two Wednesdays, Feb. 17 and Feb. 24, at noon and 7 p.m. in 170 University Hall. The series has garnered six Emmys and numerous other awards including an Academy Award nomination, the George Foster Peabody Award, and the top DuPont-Columbia Award for Excellence in Broadcast Journalism.</p>
<p>The month activities conclude with the African American High School Scholar Program, to be held Thursday, Feb. 25, at 7 p.m. in the JSAC Ballroom. During the program, outstanding students representing more than 35 high schools throughout the CSRA will be honored.</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>In honor of Black History Month, Augusta State will host various events inspired by our country’s African-American heritage.  The celebration will begin on Tuesday, Feb. 3, at 2:30 p.m. in 170 University Hall with a presentation on The Black West by Mr. Michael Searles, professor in ASU’s Department of History, Anthropology, and Philosophy.<span id="more-1382"></span></p>
<p>Other activities in February include a Gospel Extravaganza, an African drumming workshop, a jazz concert, poetry readings, and Buffalo Soldiers Day.</p>
