Augusta, GA. – The annual A Day for Augusta State University campaign to raise friends and funds for the university exceeded its goal by more than $4,000 as the campaign drew to a close on Friday, Oct. 9, with a total of $539, 016. The campaign, which began on Aug. 11, raised money for scholarships, faculty development, and academic support programs that could not be funded by state dollars.

The campus drive, themed Taking Care of Our Own, was led by ASU professors, Drs. Hubert and Debra van Tuyll, and raised $153,861 surpassing its goal of $135,000. A challenge gift of $10,000 from First Citizens Bank to benefit the Hull College of Business sparked the beginning of the university’s community campaign, led by Mr. John Bell, attorney with the Law Office of Bell and Brigham, on Sept. 15 during the President’s Club Luncheon.

“We are extremely grateful for the participation in this year’s A Day campaign. This campaign speaks volumes of not only the faculty and staff at ASU, but also of the Augusta community,” says Ms. Helen Hendee, vice president for ASU’s development and alumni affairs.

The campaign total was announced at the ASU Alumni Association’s annual alumni barbecue that culminated the A Day campaign.

Augusta, Ga. – The race is on! The A Day for Augusta State University community campaign began on Sept. 15 during the President’s Club Luncheon with a $10,000 challenge gift to benefit the Hull College of Business.

Highlighting the annual A Day campaign will be a race, a presentation by a noted author, health screenings, music, and Wonder Woman. The fundraising and friend-raising activities will begin with the Jaguar Jaunt, a 5K road race, on Saturday, Oct. 3, at 8 a.m. Beginning at the Maxwell Alumni House on McDowell Street, runners and walkers will travel through the historic Summerville area and the ASU campus. Prizes will also be awarded in several age groups. The entry fee is $15 before Sept. 29 and $20 on the day of the race.

Adam Shepard, author of Scratch Beginnings: Me, $25, and the Search for the American Dream, will be the featured speaker in the Russell A. Blanchard Distinguished Lecture Series on Tuesday, Oct. 6, at 2:30 p.m. in the Jaguar Student Activities Center ballroom. Admission is free.

On Wednesday, Oct. 7, ASU’s Department of Nursing will hold its annual Health Fair from 10 a.m.-2 p.m. at the Christenberry Fieldhouse. Call 706-737-1725 for more information.

On Thursday, Oct. 8, a Gala Concert featuring baritone Washington Isaac Holmes, a local artist who has performed throughout Europe, will be held in ASU’s Maxwell Theatre at 7:30 p.m. The concert, hosted by ASU’s Department of Music, raises money for scholarships for students in the music department.

The A Day community campaign culminates on Friday, Oct. 9, with a Phi Kappa Phi presentation and the annual Alumni and Friends Barbeque. The Honor Society of Phi Kappa Phi at ASU will present Wonder Woman Against the Nazis! Facism and Feminism in Comics 1941-1985 at 10 a.m. in 170 University Hall and admission is free. Later that evening, the Alumni and Friends barbeque will kick off at 5:30 p.m. in the D.

Augusta, Ga.-The community campaign of the A Day for Augusta State University—an annual campaign to raise funds and friends for the region’s public university—kicked off today at the annual President’s Club luncheon, held at the Augusta Country Club, following the successful end of the campus campaign that exceeded its goal by more than $14,000 totaling $148,682 to date. The campus campaign was led for the second consecutive year by Drs. Hubert and Debra van Tuyll, professors of history and communication, respectively.

During the luncheon, Mr. Phil Wahl, city president of First Citizens Bank and an ‘87 alumnus of the institution, surprised the audience by making a $10,000 challenge gift to the campaign in support of Augusta State’s Hull College of Business. The oversized check was presented to Mr. John Bell, ‘69 alumnus and partner in Bell and Brigham, and by Mr. Wahl and Mr. Kelley Mobley, senior vice president of First Citizens.

“We are extremely grateful for this gift to the A Day campaign,” said Ms. Helen Hendee, vice president for development and alumni affairs. “This gift is not only an investment in this university but an investment in our community, as our students go on to become successful leaders and business partners.”

The A Day community campaign kicks off today with a goal to raise $400,000, bringing the total campus and community goal to $535,000. The campaign concludes on Friday, Oct. 9, with the annual A Day celebration and alumni association barbecue.

Augusta, Ga.- The annual A Day for Augusta State University campaign to raise friends and funds for the university exceeded its goal by more than $3,000 as the campaign drew to a close on Oct. 10, with a total of $538,700. The two-part campaign, which began on Sept. 16, raised money for scholarships, faculty development, and academic support programs that could not be funded by state dollars.

The campus drive, led by Drs. Hubert and Debra van Tuyll, raised $157,949 surpassing its goal of $139,000. The community drive, led by Mr. Phil Wahl, ASU alumnus and senior vice president for CSRA Community Banking at Wachovia, also raised $380,751. Those who contributed to the community drive include ASU alumni, local businesses, students, and friends of the university.

Mr. Wahl says with the current tough economic environment we are living in, exceeding the A Day goal speaks well of both the community and the university.

“Seeing the community and the ASU staff, faculty, and students accomplish a goal in this trying economy, this shows the impact as well as the appreciation the university has in the community,” says Mr. Wahl.

The campaign total was announced at the ASU Alumni Association’s annual alumni barbecue that culminated the A Day activities. For more information, contact ASU’s Office of Development and Alumni Relations at 706-737-1759.

This year’s campaign will be led by ASU alumnus Phil Wahl, senior vice president for CSRA Community Banking at Wachovia.

As the community campaign kicks off, the campus campaign comes to an end, although donations will continue to be accepted.

“A good showing on campus will greatly help the volunteers raising money for us off campus, and we need every dollar we can raise,” say Hubert and Debra van Tuyll, co-chairs for the campus A Day campaign.

At the end of August, the A Day campus campaign had raised $133,000, which is nearly 99 percent of the $135,000 goal. Ten new members were added to the President’s Club.

The overall goal of the A Day for ASU campaign is $535,000.
