Augusta, Ga.- The Georgia Humanities Council (GHC) has awarded Augusta State University Communications Instructor Sea Stachura with a grant for her project Recovering History: Oral Histories of Augusta’s Forgotten 1970 Riot.

According to Stachura, the project recounts the events surrounding the May 11 riot that occurred in downtown Augusta following the death of Charles Oatman, a mentally challenged African American teenager being held in a Richmond County Jail.

“I have always enjoyed researching how communities are affected by riots, and I had a personal interest in learning more about Augusta’s race riot,” said Stachura. “So, I was so amazed to receive the GHC grant, and I know this gift will help us raise awareness about this historical event that impacted the race relations within the city of Augusta.”

Highlighting this project are testimonials from Augustans who give firsthand accounts of the protest. Some of these residents include Willie Mays, an mortician who received the body of Charles Oatman; Grady Abrams, a former city council member and community leader; Joe Bowden, a surgical resident on duty the night of the riot; William Coleman, a lawyer who represented those arrested in the riot; and Mallory Millender, Paine College professor and historian.

Stachura said the grant will be used toward the cost of transcribing the interviews as well as for two presentations that will be held next year in which narrators speak about the riot. These free programs will be held in ASU’s Maxwell Theatre on Friday, Feb. 15, at 7 p.m. and the Augusta Richmond County Public Library on Saturday, Feb. 23, at 2 p.m.

Augusta, Ga.- The Atlanta Music Project (AMP) has selected Doug Hearrington, a professor in Augusta State University’s Department of Educational Leadership, Counseling, and Special Education, to serve as an evaluator of the organization’s after-school enrichment program.

According to Hearrington, the Atlanta Music Project is a non-profit organization that provides intense music education and tutoring for undeserved youth in the Atlanta area.

“I am very honored to be working with the Atlanta Music Project, because it is organizations like AMP that help students strive for excellence in every area of their lives,” said Hearrington.

Throughout this one-year study, Hearrington says he and his research team will distribute assessments and conduct interviews with parents and students. After which, he and his team will use the data gathered from these interviews to review factors such as how AMP benefits the community and the overall improvement of the self-esteem and academic success of the students.

Although the collecting process will take several weeks, Hearrington hopes to have the results from his evaluation available in the spring or summer of next year.

Hearrington, who joined the ASU faculty this year, is a member of several organizations including the Association for Supervision and Curriculum Development, the Eastern Educational Research Association, and the Association for Supervision and Curriculum Development.

His research on technology and education has been published in numerous publications, and he has presented his work at several conferences including the Georgia Educational Technology Conference and the American Educational Research Association meeting.

Hearrington received a bachelor’s degree from San Diego State University, and he obtained masters and doctoral degrees from the University of Nevada, Las Vegas.

Augusta, Ga.- A lecture series being hosted by the Augusta State University Humanities Program in collaboration with the Morris Museum of Art kicks off this month. The series is part of a grant project called Linking Local Resources to World History.

According to Kristin Casaletto, director of ASU’s Humanities Program, this program is funded by a $2,000 Community Partnership grant awarded to ASU’s humanities program from the Georgia Humanities Council in 2011.

“ASU is very honored to be working with the Morris Museum of Art to present programs that we hope will increase humanities education in area schools and surrounding communities,” said Casaletto.

The first lecture in this series will be held Friday, Nov. 16, and will feature ASU art professor Karen Klacsmann discussing The Enduring Influence of Classical Cultures. The next session will be held Friday, Nov. 30, with ASU professor of German Rob Bledsoe presenting a talk on Arts and Issues in Northern European Culture. The lecture series will conclude on Friday, March 22, with ASU history professor Hubert van Tuyll discussing Impressionism: Arts and Change in the Nineteenth Century.

All of these sessions are free and will begin at 1 p.m. in the Morris Museum of Art auditorium.

According to Casaletto, this lecture series is part of a one-year initiative in which both organizations are working together to create six educational units, each linked to a specific work of art at the museum, that explore historical themes that reveal Augusta’s connection to international culture and history.

In addition to this lecture series, Casaletto says other goals of the partnership grant project include the creation of a new museum tour for students and the public and the enhancement of the humanities resources being distributed by local educational and historical institutions.

Augusta, Ga.- Computer attacks that target software flaws are becoming more common and last longer than most cyber security experts have anticipated.

Learn more about these active malware attacks during the presentation of Gone in 60 Minutes – Proof of Concept to Exploit being held Tuesday, Oct. 30, at 7 p.m. in 170 University Hall.

The keynote speaker for this free event is David Hoelzer, founder of Cyber-Defense, a free open-source software organization that releases network, system, and forensic security tools.

During this fast-paced lecture, Hoelzer will take only 60 minutes to show just how quick and easy it is for malware attacks, or any other forms of zero-day attacks, to exploit the vulnerabilities and flaws imbedded in computer software.

Augusta, Ga.- Jurgen Brauer, professor of economics in the James M. Hull College of Business, will launch his latest book via a webcast on Tuesday, Oct. 23, at 10 a.m., and later in the day he will be a speaker at a Congressional briefing organized by California Congressman Michael Honda.

Brauer’s book, Peace Economics: A Macroeconomic Primer for Violence-Afflicted States, which he coauthored with J. Paul Dunne is being released by the U. S. Institute of Peace (USIP), a nonpartisan conflict management center created by Congress to prevent and mitigate international conflict without violence. The book has been endorsed by Nobel-Laureate Kenneth Arrow.

“The book is the first in a new series of Academy Guides established by the USIP and meant to be used for training purposes of government and non-governmental organization field-personnel as they assist in rebuilding countries devastated by violence,” said Brauer. “The text also has already been adopted for use at New York University as a class textbook in fall 2012.”

The webcast launching the peace economics book will be moderated by Raymond Gilpin, director of USIP’s Sustainable Economies and will feature Brauer and Dunne as speakers. The discussants will include Clare Lockart, co-founder and chief executive officer at The Institute for State Effectiveness, and Todd Moss, vice president for Programs and Senior Fellow at the Center for Global Development. To register for the event, go to http://www.usip.org/events/applying-peace-economics-in-dangerous-places.

The congressional briefing will begin at 2 p.m. and Brauer will discuss Economic Policies for Violence-Afflicted States.

“Sound economic policy and a stable economic framework are essential for societies to recover from conflict, yet too few U.S. policymakers have the economic background necessary to apply economic concepts effectively when advising other nations on their recovery,” said Rep. Honda. “USIP’s new book, Peace Economics, fills the gap.”

Rep. Honda also stated that guide provides a concise but broad overview of macroeconomic fundamentals as they touch on violence-afflicted states, with an expanded emphasis on issues of social reconstruction, social contracts and social capital.

Brauer has served as a consultant to the World Bank, the United Nations, NATO, the U.S. National Defense University, and as the chief economist in the Office of the Comptroller for New York City. He also has been a Peace Fellow of the U.S. Institute of Peace and is a member of the academic honor societies of Sigma Xi, Phi Kappa Phi, and Beta Gamma Sigma. He received his bachelor’s degree from the Free University of Berlin and master’s and doctoral degrees from the University of Notre Dame.
