In this year’s ceremony, ASU’s Department of Military Science will feature two speakers, Brig. Gen. Robert H. Woods and Lt. Shawn Hammond.

In 1979, Brig. Gen. Woods was commissioned into the Army through the ROTC program at Augusta State as an Air Defense Artillery Officer. Before his retirement, he served in many capacities including Commanding General of the 32nd Air Missile Defense Command and director of Human Resources Policy Directorate in the U.S. Army’s Office of the Deputy Chief of Staff in Washington, D.C.

Lt. Hammond has served our country through combat and as a lawyer.  In 1992, he was commissioned into the Army as an Infantry Officer through the ROTC program at ASU. Recently, he returned from active duty in Afghanistan and Iraq where he was awarded nine medals including the Combat Infantryman’s Badge and Bronze Star.  Since 1996, he has been practicing law with a focus on military, criminal, and family law.

Ms. Koepke, a landscape architect, has taught basic design, planting design, and computer applications, and is currently teaching Therapeutic Site Design.  Her current practice includes research in therapeutic site design, preliminary master planning of healing gardens at Athens Regional Hospital and a preliminary design for a therapeutic garden planned to serve the new neuro-intensive care unit of Emory University Hospital.

She has directed the Governor’s Teaching Fellows Program since 2000 and has been involved in the area of faculty development as a charter member of the UGA Teaching Academy, as a Lilly Teaching Fellow, and as a University Senior Teaching Fellow.

She is an adjunct faculty member in the Institute of Higher Education at the University of Georgia where she directs the Governor’s Teaching Fellows, an educational and faculty development program which serves faculty in higher education for State of Georgia.

Ms. Koepke holds degrees in landscape architecture from Iowa State University and Kansas State University and has an extensive record of professional design work in both the private and government sector. She has been at UGA in the School of Environmental Design since 1984 and previously taught at Kansas State University, as faculty in-residence in Aspen, and studied on scholarship in Cortona, Italy.

She has been honored with the Hubert B. Owens Distinguished Teaching Award at Kansas State University and was given the Student’s Choice Teaching Award at UGA in 2002. She also received the School of Environmental Design Alumni Association Distinguished Faculty Award.

Augusta, Ga. – A new need-based scholarship is being offered at Augusta State that provides full tuition and mandatory fees for four academic years.  Applications for the Regents’ Foundation Scholarship are available in the financial aid office and the deadline for application is October 6.

Eligibility requirements: must be incoming freshman for fall 2008; must be federal Pell Grant eligible; must be a resident of Georgia; must have a high school grade point average between 2.5 and 2.9; and cannot be Hope Scholarship eligible.

Dr. Parham, who also serves as editor of the Southern Poetry Review, will present a program at the Meet and Greet Author Reception, 6-9 p.m., on Friday, Sept. 19, in the café. Saturday’s events run from 11 a.m. through 8:45 p.m., beginning with a panel discussion at 11 a.m., Publishers Perspective for Writers. The panel will address the publishing process from the publishers’ perspective, from query letter to advances and contracts, and will feature three publishers/editors.

Also on Saturday, at noon, Dr. Jim Garvey, chair of the Department of Communications and Professional Writing; Professor Michael Searles, Department of History, Anthropology, and Philosophy; and Ms. Karen Gillespie will discuss How to Find Success as a Writer, giving tips on various ways writers can find their successful niche. At 2 p.m., Professor Doug Joiner, Department of Communications and Professional Writing, will present Forbidden Broadway, a spoof of Broadway hits; from 3-3:45 p.m., Dr. Hubert van Tuyll, chair of the Department of History, Anthropology, and Philosophy, and Dr. Debra van Tuyll, Department of Communications and Professional Writing, will discuss On Writing and Researching the Civil War; and from 4-4:45 p.m., Professor Nancy Sutherland, Department of English and Foreign Languages, and Lynette Samuel, participate on a Children’s Literature Panel. From 5-5:45 p.m., Dr. Lee Ann Caldwell, director of the Center for the Study of Georgia History, will speak on Writing and Researching the History of Augusta; from 6-6:45 p.m., Professor Rick Davis, Department of Communications and Professional Writing, will present a monologue he authored, The Sword Swallower’s Husband. The evening concludes with a 7 p.m. concert.

On Sunday, Sept. 21, book signings begin at noon, and at 2:30, Professor Ted Atkinson, Department of English and Foreign Languages, will read from his book Faulkner and The Great Depression: Aesthetic, Ideology, and Cultural Politics.

The Literary Café is being sponsored by the university and the event is being coordinated by Ms. Leza Witherington, Department of Communications and Professional Writing at 706-729-2316.

The event serves as the start of the community campaign of A Day for Augusta State University, an annual campaign that raises friends and funds for the university. ASU alumnus Phil Wahl, senior vice president for CSRA Community Banking at Wachovia, is chairing the community campaign. The luncheon also marks the close of the campus campaign of A Day which was led by Hubert and Debra van Tuyll, professors of history and communications, respectively.

The campus campaign raised over $135,000 surpassing its goal. This year’s overall A Day goal is $535,000. The A Day for ASU campaign will culminate on Friday, Oct. 10, at 5:30 p.m. with an alumni barbecue in the ASU quadrangle.
