Augusta, Ga. – In a partnership to foster research and scholarship, Savannah River Remediation, LLC (SRR) recently presented Augusta State with a check for $5,000 to assist the university’s Center for Undergraduate Research and Scholarship.
“We are grateful to SRR for their support of undergraduate research at ASU,” said J. Andrew Hauger, professor of physics and director of the center. “The CURS grant program supports undergraduate research by providing funding for supplies and equipment needed to successfully complete undergraduate research projects. The gift from SRR will be dedicated to the support of student research in the sciences and mathematics.”
Savannah River Remediation is the Savannah River Site’s Liquid Waste contractor for the U.S. Department of Energy. SRR is composed of personnel from a team of companies led by URS with partners Bechtel National, CH2M Hill, and Babcock & Wilcox. Critical subcontractors for the contract are AREVA, Energy Solutions, and URS Safety Management Solutions.
“Advancing research at ASU is a good fit for the mission of SRR,” said Dave Olson, president and project manager of SRR.
“It is vitally important that we have the scientists, engineers, and others with the technical experience and innovation to meet future demands and challenges of nuclear technology,” he added. “This support for ASU’s Center for Undergraduate Research and Scholarship will give undergraduates the opportunity to gain practical experience and knowledge that is required for these fields.”
Olson, who earned an MBA from Augusta State, was accompanied by Dean Campbell, public affairs officer for SRR, and recent ASU graduate Jennifer Randolph, an employee of SRR, for the ceremonial check presentation that took place Oct. 20 at Augusta State.

Augusta State University is the first in the Augusta area to get a Coca Cola Interactive Vendor (CCIV). Click here to learn more.

Augusta, Ga. – Coca-Cola has introduced its second generation of Coca Cola Interactive Vendors (CCIV) to the United States, and Augusta State University is the first in the Augusta area to get a taste.
According to Karl Munschy, director of ASU’s Office of Business Services, the Coca Cola Bottling Company Unit Inc. in Augusta installed the CCIV for the university as a way to introduce the high-tech machine to Augusta’s younger demographic. The 79-inch tall touch screen machine has been placed in ASU’s Jaguar Student Activities Center breezeway.
“We are excited and honored to know Coca Cola asked ASU to be the first place to introduce their CCIV to Augusta,” Munschy said. “This is proof of our long-standing relationship with the company, and we know the students will really enjoy it.”
According to Mike Jones, business development manager at the Augusta Coca Cola Bottling Company United, the CCIV holds up to 10 beverage selections and features a 46-inch screen divided into three zones. The first zone allows the consumer to browse the beverage selections, and the second zone allows the buyer to “spin” digital bottles around for an up-close view of the nutritional information. Finally, the third zone, which the company has dubbed the “app zone,” offers a variety of games.

Physics professor Trinanjan Datta has garnered national recognition by being named an Anacapa Scholar.

Physics professor Trinanjan Datta has garnered national recognition by being named an Anacapa Scholar, a prestigious honor recognizing his involvement in undergraduate research. The award was presented from the Anacapa Society, a professional organization based at Amherst College that promotes research in all areas of theoretical and computational physics at primarily undergraduate institutions.

The society is an outgrowth of the Kavli Institute for Theoretical Physics (KITP), one of the world’s most renowned institutes for theoretical physics. The KITP is housed at the University of California, Santa Barbara, and previously, Datta was one of eight theoretical physicists in the nation to be named a KITP Scholar.

As an Anacapa Scholar, Datta now has the opportunity to work with primarily undergraduate institutions throughout the nation in developing programs to promote research in theoretical and computational physics.

“I am honored to have received this award,” Datta said. “I look forward to working with these universities as we look for ways to give students more opportunities to expand their knowledge of physics.”

Datta has been published extensively in scientific journals and has presented at conferences throughout the United States. An assistant professor of physics, he joined the Augusta State faculty in 2007. Earlier this year, Datta was named the recipient of the university’s 2011 Louis K. Bell Research Award.

He received his bachelor’s degree in physics from St. Xavier’s College, University of Calcutta, India; a master’s degree from the Indian Institute of Technology in Kanpur; and a doctoral degree in physics from Purdue University.

A new $27 million academic building for Augusta State University is one step closer to reality following the submission of an external design of the building from the architects.

Augusta, Ga. – A new $27 million academic building for Augusta State University is one step closer to reality following the submission of an external design of the building from the architects.

The design incorporates months of planning with input from many campus representatives, said Jeff Foley, assistant vice president for campus development at ASU. “Great progress has been made in the design phase of the new building. Studio 3 Design Group, P.C., along with 2KM Architects have done an outstanding job of incorporating the needs of the Hull College of Business and the Department of Nursing,” he said.

The complete design and programming for the building is expected to be finished within the next six months. It will hold state-of-the-art classrooms, computer labs, designated student study spaces, faculty offices, and a large, multipurpose room to serve both programs.

Located at ASU West, the building will be situated on a parcel of land next to University Village that was gifted from the city of Augusta.

The University System of Georgia Board of Regents awarded $2 million to ASU in January to fund the design of the building. Its construction has not yet been funded by the Board of Regents.

“If all goes according to plan, however, the new building could be constructed on Damascus Road in late 2014,” said Foley.

Planning is also underway for the space in University Hall and Allgood Hall that will become available when the nursing department and the Hull College move into the new academic building.

For more information, call Tunisia Williams, assistant director in ASU’s Office of Public Relations and Publications, at 706-737-1877.
