Augusta, Ga. – In a partnership to foster research and scholarship, Savannah River Remediation, LLC (SRR) recently presented Augusta State with a check for $5,000 to assist the university’s Center for Undergraduate Research and Scholarship.
“We are grateful to SRR for their support of undergraduate research at ASU,” said J. Andrew Hauger, professor of physics and director of the center. “The CURS grant program supports undergraduate research by providing funding for supplies and equipment needed to successfully complete undergraduate research projects. The gift from SRR will be dedicated to the support of student research in the sciences and mathematics.”
Savannah River Remediation is the Savannah River Site’s Liquid Waste contractor for the U.S. Department of Energy. SRR is composed of personnel from a team of companies led by URS with partners Bechtel National, CH2M Hill, and Babcock & Wilcox. Critical subcontractors for the contract are AREVA, Energy Solutions, and URS Safety Management Solutions.
“Advancing research at ASU is a good fit for the mission of SRR,” said Dave Olson, president and project manager of SRR.
“It is vitally important that we have the scientists, engineers, and others with the technical experience and innovation to meet future demands and challenges of nuclear technology,” he added. “This support for ASU’s Center for Undergraduate Research and Scholarship will give undergraduates the opportunity to gain practical experience and knowledge that is required for these fields.”
Olson, who earned an MBA from Augusta State, was accompanied by Dean Campbell, public affairs officer for SRR, and recent ASU graduate Jennifer Randolph, an employee of SRR, for the ceremonial check presentation that took place Oct. 20 at Augusta State.

Augusta, Ga. – Coca-Cola has introduced its second generation of Coca Cola Interactive Vendors (CCIV) to the United States, and Augusta State University is the first in the Augusta area to get a taste.
According to Karl Munschy, director of ASU’s Office of Business Services, the Coca Cola Bottling Company Unit Inc. in Augusta installed the CCIV for the university as a way to introduce the high-tech machine to Augusta’s younger demographic. The 79-inch tall touch screen machine has been placed in ASU’s Jaguar Student Activities Center breezeway.
“We are excited and honored to know Coca Cola asked ASU to be the first place to introduce their CCIV to Augusta,” Munschy said. “This is proof of our long-standing relationship with the company, and we know the students will really enjoy it.”
According to Mike Jones, business development manager at the Augusta Coca Cola Bottling Company United, the CCIV holds up to 10 beverage selections and features a 46-inch screen divided into three zones. The first zone allows the consumer to browse the beverage selections, and the second zone allows the buyer to “spin” digital bottles around for an up-close view of the nutritional information. Finally, the third zone, which the company has dubbed the “app zone,” offers a variety of games.
