Acosta and Macnamara both won a telescope.</p><p><strong>Robert Foster</strong>, music, presented <em>Accentuate the Negative? On Teaching Biographical Details in Jazz History</em> at the International Conference on Arts &amp; Humanities in Honolulu, Hawaii. He performed Piano Concerto in A minor by Edvard Grieg. The orchestra was directed by Mirna Ogrizovic-Ciric.</p><p>ASU student <strong>Anna Unchu Pyon</strong> performed at the Georgia Music Teachers Association (GMTA) Convention held at Columbus State University in November. Unchu Pyon was selected as the highest prize winner in her age category in the statewide GMTA State Auditions last April.</p><p>ASU student<strong> Sophia Ryoo</strong> was chosen a winner in the Georgia Music Educators Association (GMEA) auditions. Ryoo will be performing as a recitalist in the GMEA annual conference in Savannah in late January. There are only three college winners chosen in the entire state of Georgia. <strong>Branden Rollen</strong>, a piano student of <strong>Rosalyn Floyd</strong>, music, was chosen as a masterclass winner in the same audition.  <strong>Martin David Jones’</strong>, music, student <strong>Kenneth Davis</strong> was chosen as first alternate in this competition and Floyd&#8217;s student <strong>Justin Hornsby</strong> received Honorable Mention.</p><p><strong>Hubert van Tuyll</strong>, history, anthropology, and philosophy, published his fifth book, <em>Historical Contexts &amp; Literature</em>.  The textbook was co-authored with Karl Bahm and Kelly Enright.</p><p><strong>In the News</strong></p><p><strong>William A. /> <strong>Pedro Pablo Hoyos-Salcedo</strong>, English and foreign languages, has been selected as a member of the Board of Referees for the L’Érudit franco-espagnol, a peer-reviewed journal of French and Hispanic literatures.</p><p>In October, <strong>William Willis</strong>, art, was one of many artists to have his works featured at the Monsanto Art Gallery as part of Lander University’s Fall 2011 Exhibits. The drawing, collages, and sculptures created from a collaborative effort of <strong>Brian Rust</strong>, art, and Augusta, Ga., artist Kath Engler also were featured in the university’s fall exhibition. He discussed the regional assets that make our region unique as well as the need for the counties within the Central Savannah River Area to collaborate and work together.</p><p><strong>Scott Argo</strong>, admissions, was recently elected to serve as president-elect for the Georgia Association of Collegiate Registrars and Admissions (GACRAO). GACRAO is composed of higher education professionals from more than 100 admissions and records departments at public and private colleges and universities located throughout the state of Georgia. The association works to advance the professional goals of its members through the dissemination of information and the interchange of ideas on problems of common interest to higher education.</p><p><strong>Jean Pawl</strong>, nursing, successfully defended her PhD in Nursing at Georgia State University. Pawl is the program’s first Supporting Technologically Enhanced PhD Studies (STEP) graduate. STEP is a special grant initiative program that is designed to &#8220;grow&#8221; more doctoral prepared nurse educators in Georgia.</p><p>Two ASU professors are serving as chairs of the Georgia Conference of the American Association of University Professors (AAUP): <strong>Robert Scott</strong>, math and computer science, heads the Committee on Contingent Faculty and <strong>Kim Davies</strong>, sociology, criminal justice, and social work, has just chaired Committee W: Status of Women.  In these capacities, they also function as part of the Georgia Conference’s Executive Committee.</p><p><strong>Louise Shivers</strong>, writer- in-residence, English and foreign languages, has been included in the Augusta Museum of History&#8217;s Exhibit Local Legends.</p><p><strong>Christian Poppeliers</strong>, chemistry and physics, recently published a paper in the Bulletin of the Seismological Society of America. <a

The award was presented at the AEJMC annual meeting in St. Louis, Mo.</p><p><strong>Duane Halbur</strong>, educational leadership, counseling, and special education, has been named chair of the College of Education’s committee for online learning. Since joining the committee last year, Halbur has taken the lead in investigating and disseminating information regarding Quality Matters and Academic Partnerships.</p><p><strong>Patricia Harris</strong>, human resources, won the faculty/staff dessert contest at University Village with Famous and Fabulous Banana Pudding. She received a gift certificate for two to Cheddar’s. <strong>Amanda Boland</strong>, Career Center, and <strong>Tom Colbert</strong>, chemistry and physics, both came in second place. Thanks also to <strong>Katherine Sweeney</strong>, <strong>Kim Davies</strong>, <strong>Karen Belk</strong>, <strong>Camilla Reid</strong>, <strong>Sherry Walker</strong>, and <strong>Gina Thurman</strong> for their desserts.</p><p>Selected works by <strong>Philip Morsberger</strong>, Morris Eminent Scholar Emeritus in Art, and Anita Huffington will be on display at the Steffen Thomas Museum of Art from September 9 through October 30.  The Eye of the Beholder showcases the talents of these two friends, one a painter, the other a sculptor.  The opening reception for this show, which is free and open to the public, will be September 9 at 7 p.m.</p><p><strong>Ray Rowland</strong>, former director of Reese Library, and his wife, Jane have published the newest printed volume of Junior College of Augusta Administration, Faculty and Staff: A Pictorial History from The Rainbow, 1926-1957 with Sketches of Other Educational Institutions in Augusta, Georgia. This is one of a series of printed materials he is compiling which relate to Augusta State and which will be valuable resources in building the ASU Biographical Directory and documenting the university’s history.</p><p><strong>Michael Bishku</strong>, history, anthropology, and philosophy, has authored The Relations of the Central Asian Republics of Kazakhstan and Uzbekistan with Israel, which will be published in the journal Middle Eastern Studies.</p><p><strong>Jeff Foley</strong>, campus development, spoke to the Kiwanis Club about leadership and the current military situation.</p><p><strong>Kristin Casaletto</strong>, art, will participate in an invitational exhibit at The Fire House Gallery in Louisville, Ga., called Dixie Icons: Re-visioning the Myth of Dixie. The show runs September 7 – October 9, 2011, with an opening reception on September 7. An exhibition catalogue also will be published, and the show is expected to travel around the South through 2012.</p><p><strong>Gaye Ortiz</strong>, communications and professional writing, has published two book reviews, Disreputable and Devout: Interpreting the Bible&#8217;s Women in the Arts and Music and An Altar in the World: A Geography of Faith in the journal Reviews in Religion and Theology. The honor encompasses all eight campuses of GMC.</p><p><strong>Debbie van Tuyll</strong>, communications and professional writing, had a journalism history paper accepted for presentation at a November conference in Dublin.</p><p><strong>Carol Waggoner-Angleton</strong>, special collections assistant in Reese Library, has been awarded the 2011 Hubbard Scholarship by the Georgia Library Association (GLA) to help cover her expenses in the master’s degree program at Valdosta State University. This scholarship is made possible by the family and friends of Mr. C.S. Hubbard, an early supporter of libraries in Georgia. The purpose of the scholarship is to recruit excellent librarians for Georgia and to provide financial assistance toward the completion of a master&#8217;s degree in library science.</p><p><strong>Lillian Wan</strong>, Reese Library, received the 2010 Most Dependable Platelet Donor Award from the Shepeard Community Blood Center. In May, she also was honored for donating her 29th gallon of blood.</p><p>Reese Library and Media Services employees raised funds to sponsor a hole in the Lynndale, Inc., We are Special golf tournament at the Waynesboro Country Club. <strong>Kyle McCarrell</strong> represented Reese Library in the tournament. Holes were sponsored by many local businesses and organizations to raise money to support the Exceptional Bowling League and Lynndale Special Olympics programs.</p><p>ASU film student, <strong>Banks Pappas</strong>, was quoted in a <em>Metro Sprit</em> article about Reese Library’s Special Collections being a source of inspiration for his documentary <em>Stars and Bars Aflame</em>. The film about the May 1970 Augusta race riots will be submitted to the Sundance and Tribeca Film Festivals. The filmmaker says that he viewed footage of the riots, which led to his decision to document the effect of racial disparity in Augusta.</p><p>Thirteen students from Augusta State’s Hull College of Business came away with six national awards competing against the nation’s best business students at the Phi Beta Lambda National Leadership Conference held in Orlando in late June. <strong>Cory Wilkins</strong> earned two awards placing sixth in International Business and seventh in Marketing Concepts. Thanks to generous corporate sponsors, <strong>Lacie Irvine</strong> collected $300 by placing third in Accounting Analysis &amp; Decision Making. Also with national honors were <strong>Rachel Neely</strong>, eighth in Accounting for Professionals; <strong>Walter Richardso</strong>n, sixth in Financial Analysis &amp; Decision Making; and <strong>Bradley Brown</strong>, sixth in Information Management. Rounding out the delegation of competitors were <strong>Ebony Baylis</strong>, <strong>Brittany Henderson</strong>,<strong> Greer Peel</strong>,<strong> Korey Anderson</strong>, <strong>Matthew Howard</strong>, <strong>Jamal Milton</strong>, <strong>Dante Pilgrim</strong>, and <strong>Frank Schmidt</strong>.</p><p>In the News<br
