ARTstor celebrates Chinese New Year
The Year of the Dragon, which begins Jan. 23, marks the end of the winter season. The ARTstor Digital Library, a database available through Reese Library, is celebrating the Chinese New Year by featuring its extensive collections of Chinese art, architecture, and culture.
The traditional Chinese calendar is based on a combination of lunar and solar movements; the year begins with the night of the first full moon of the lunar New Year and ends on the 15th day. This year is signified by the dragon, the bringer of rain and good luck, and the only mythical animal in the Chinese zodiac. You can visit the ARTstor blog on the Chinese Year of the Dragon at: http://artstor.wordpress.com/2012/01/12/happy-chinese-new-year-year-of-the-dragon/
ARTstor provides more than one million digital images in the arts, architecture, humanities, and sciences with an accessible suite of software tools for teaching and research. At Augusta State University it is heavily used in the Humanities program and art classes. ARTstor has the potential to enhance learning in many other courses as well. One feature of the database is that instructors can create image groups and folders for course use.
For more information about using the ARTstor database please contact LouAnn Blocker, Electronic Resources and Serials Librarian at lblocke1@aug.edu or 706-667-4907.
Language Bank
Reese Library provides a service to the community by maintaining a database of persons having skills in languages other than English who act as interpreters and translators in assisting persons and organizations in need of those services.
The database has been available for more than 20 years at the library and is in need of a fresh infusion of new interpreters and translators.
Whether or not participants charge a fee for their services is between the participant and the person or organization requesting the services. Reese Library’s involvement is limited to maintaining the database and sending a list of participants for the particular language when a request is received.
If interested in providing language services, contact Rick Sulzycki at csulzyck@aug.edu, 706-737-1748.
