ASU Celebrates Black History Month

Augusta State University will celebrate Black History Month with various events taking place throughout the month of February.

Highlighting the month will be the Buffalo Soldiers presentation and demonstration at 11 a.m. and noon, respectively, on Feb. 20. This annual event features Buffalo Soldier riders from the Atlanta area who will perform horse maneuvers on  the sports field located near the D. Douglas Barnard, Jr., Amphitheatre.

As part of Africa Day, Nate Plageman will serve as the keynote speaker as he presents From Nightclub to Nation?: The Impact of Popular Music in Independence Era Ghana on Tuesday, Feb. 21, at noon in W1002 Science Hall. Plageman, assistant professor of African History at Wake Forest University, will discuss Ghanaian Highlife music and the Ghanaian independence movement of the mid-20th century. His courses emphasize African communities’ historical agency, explore how African peoples engaged with their lived environment, and interrogate the production and presentation of historical knowledge. Plageman received his bachelor’s degree from Saint Olaf College and both his master and doctoral degrees from Indiana University-Bloomington.
