Jasper Cooke, public safety, participated in the annual summer training conference of the Georgia Association of Chiefs of Police education as part of his continuing education and training in the administration of law enforcement. Held in Savannah, the conference offered sessions on a wide range of subjects such as the Open Records Act, federal partnerships, prosecution of gangs, active shooters, and First Amendment issues in social networking. Over 440 heads of law enforcement agencies attended the conference.
Stephen Hobbs, psychology, was awarded the 2010 CSRA Mental Health Advocate of the Year Award at the Augusta Mental Health Advocacy Coalition’s legislative dinner in May.
Sea Stachura, communications and professional writing, had her article Many Small Golf Courses Can No Longer Swing It published on www.npr.org.
Debbie van Tuyll, communications and professional writing, published The Past is Prologue, Or How Nineteenth-Century Journalism Might Just Save Twenty-First Century Newspapers in the August issue of the international journal, Journalism Studies. The article is based on a presentation she gave last fall at the Future of Journalism conference at the Cardiff University in Cardiff, Wales.
van Tuyll also gave an invited lecture at the David Wills House Museum in Gettysburg, Pa., on June 24. Her topic was Lincoln and the 1860 Presidential Election in the Southern Press. The David Wills House is where President Abraham Lincoln stayed when he traveled to Gettysburg in November 1863 to give his most famous address.
