The city’s 2010 Westobou Festival, being held Sept. 16-25, will feature some of the outstanding talents of the ASU Department of Music faculty and students. Unless otherwise noted, all performances take place at 7:30 p.m. at the Maxwell Theatre. Faculty artists also will be featured in several exhibitions at downtown galleries.
On Saturday, Sept. 18, enjoy a night at the opera as ASU’s Opera Ensemble performs a selection of arias and scenes from various operas. This lively production is being directed by ASU professor Patti Myers.
A concert, Jazz Innovators, will feature internationally known jazz artists on Sept. 19. The program will feature ASU music professor Rob Foster, local jazz band Pulsar, and renowned jazz musicians Ravi Coltrane, son of jazz legend John Coltrane and pianist and harpist Alice Coltrane; Ralph Alessi, jazz trumpeter and composer; and Art Lande, Grammy-nominated pianist and composer. This event is made possible by a Porter Fleming Foundation grant of $10,000 to the ASU Foundation.
A Sept. 20 concert, A Celebration of Schumann Songs, will feature ASU professors Linda Banister, mezzo soprano, and Rosalyn Floyd, pianist, with baritone Washington Isaacs Holmes.
On Sept. 21, a Chamber Music Extravaganza featuring Trio Augusta and the Magellan String Quartet will perform. Trio Augusta features ASU professors Angela Morgan, violin; Christine Crookall, cello; and Martin David Jones, piano. The Magellan String Quartet features violinists Laura Tomlin, Eliza Hesse, Carl Purdy, and Ruth Berry. Outstanding ASU music students will present a recital showcase at 1 p.m. on Sept. 22. Two Piano Tango on Sept. 23 at 7:30 p.m. will feature ASU music professors Martin David Jones and Clara Park. These programs are being coordinated by Ms. Park.
