ASU receives $400,000 grant
Augusta State University has received a $419,520 grant from the National Science Foundation (NSF) to fund a Savannah River Scholars Program (SRSP). The new program will be under the direction of Andrew Hauger, chair of the Department of Chemistry and Physics, and Sam Robinson, chair of the Department of Mathematics and Computer Science. It will integrate research and education as well as foster an increased diversity in NSF programs, projects, and activities.

Energy Conservation Efforts
Please note that lights in parking lots 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 15, 16, 18, 21, 22, 23, and 25 will be turned off  through Aug. 13 in order to conserve energy. Exterior building lights and the sidewalk lights will remain on all night. Lights also will continue to work in offices and classrooms. On Friday, Aug. 13, all lights should be back on a normal schedule. Also –on Monday, Aug. 2, parking lot #4 will be closed temporarily due to the removal of two large trees. The lot also may be closed on Tuesday, Aug. 3, to complete the removal.

The power also will be turned off in Washington Hall on the following weekends:  Aug. 7 and 8, Aug. 14, and Aug. 21 to facilitate electrical maintenance. There will be no lights, power to outlets, or air conditioning available. The Bookstore will be affected only on Aug. 7 and 8.

Town Hall Meeting
A QEP—Quality Enhancement Plan—is part of the SACS accreditation process that describes actions related to student learning that the university undertakes to enhance educational quality. The goals and strategies identified in the QEP must link to improving the quality of student learning.  Debbie van Tuyll, communications and professional writing, is leading the QEP planning effort.

In that regard, a town hall meeting will be held on Tuesday, Aug. 10, at  2 p.m. in Hardy Meeting Room in the Jaguar Student Activity Center. Dr. van Tuyll will talk about the QEP process, discuss what a QEP proposal needs to look like, and the research findings on student deficiencies that can be used as the basis  for QEP proposals. Research is posted on the QEP site in the ASU Oak.

P-Card Training
For those on campus who need to attend P-card training, a training session will be offered on Thursday, Aug. 19, 2:30 p.m. in 129 University Hall. Training must be completed each year. Please register with Amber Armour, P-card Coordinator, at 706-737-1765.

Budget Reductions
Earlier in July, Gov. Sonny Perdue ordered all state agencies, including the University System of Georgia, to reduce its budget by 4%. The reduction in August State’s budget of approximately $50 million will be made up by deferring the purchase of needed equipment and delaying campus maintenance projects. No furloughs are planned at this time. K-12 schools are exempt from the reductions.
