Shannon Nix, counseling center, has been selected as the College Counselor of the Year by the Georgia College Counseling Association (GCCA). This award is presented annually to recognize college counselors for their clinical excellence and meritorious service to the profession.
Ms. Nix, counselor and housing liaison, says, “I am very honored to have been selected for this award. Working on a college campus as a counselor affords me the opportunity not just to counsel, but also to advocate, educate, mentor, and have fun; I am grateful for all of these opportunities.”
In the nomination letter, Robert Mays, counseling center director, states, “Shannon communicates very well with our diverse student body and consistently applies best practices in the performance of her job duties and her commitment to her own professional development.” She was nominated by Dr. Mays for her contributions to the university and her community involvement with the annual Take Back the Night events.
“I feel that having my director nominate me and receiving the award are proof of my dedication to my career and to the students at ASU,” she says.
Ms. Nix, who joined the ASU family in 2003, received her bachelor’s degree in psychology from the University of South Carolina at Aiken and her master’s degree in clinical psychology from ASU.
All nominations for the award undergo review by the GCCA Executive Council Members. Each member has one vote per award category, and the nominee with the most votes receives the award for that category. These awards were developed to recognize the many achievements of GCCA members. Ms. Nix has been a member of GCCA for seven years and has served as a board member for the organization.
