Lynn Carmack, purchasing office, recently earned Certified Professional Public Buyer certification from the Universal Public Purchasing Certification Council. According to the UPPCC’s website, this trend in governmental purchasing is for mandatory certification of procurement professionals. The certification denotes that the candidate has reached a specific level of education and experience and is knowledgeable about government purchasing.

Melissa Furman, Hull College, was selected as one of Augusta’s Top 10 in 10 Young Professionals to Watch by the Augusta Metro Chamber of Commerce and Augusta Magazine. These professionals will be eligible for consideration by Georgia Trend for their annual feature, Top 40 under 40 in the state of Georgia.

Robert Gustafson, kinesiology and heath science, has been elected as the vice president of membership for the Riverwalk Toastmasters.

Impressions Count: Instructional Strategies for the First Day of Class is the topic of a presentation being given by Pamela Hayward, communications and professional writing, during the 2010 Scholarship of Teaching and Learning Conference. Dr. Hayward is a co-author of Instructor’s Manual for Communicating for Success, which is set to be released next year.

Joyce Jones, student services, was named chair of the Regents Administrative Committee on Student Affairs for 2010-11.

Anthony Kellman, communications and professional writing, published his newest poem titled Tale of the Yard Fowls in the current issue of the New Delta Review.

Marsha Loda, Hull College, presented research on What’s the buzz: comparing publicity and the web at the American Marketing Association’s Advanced Research Techniques conference. The event was held last month in San Francisco, Calif. She also was named to the board of Leadership Augusta.

Dip Metress, athletics, was the featured speaker at a South Augusta Rotary Club meeting in June.

Tom Nakashima, art, will have his work featured in The Missing Peace: Artists Consider the Dalai Lama exhibition, a project inspired by the1989 Nobel Peace Prize recipient. The exhibit is being held at the Brukenthal Palace Museum and Evangelical Church in Sibiu, Romania. In October, the works of art will be on display at the Nobel Museum in Stockholm, Sweden, until January 2011.

Raoul Pacheco, art, has art on display in the main gallery of the Gertrude Herbert Institute of Art. In a project titled External Return, Mr. Pacheco uses the influences of his childhood to create 2-D and 3-D art forms using non-traditional methods such as new mix media ceramics. The exhibition runs through July 30.

Clemson University has launched a new site, Nature Based Art,  which features the Earthen Bridge installation that was created by faculty artist Brian Rust. Mr. Rust’s artwork  is one of many botanical garden sculptures to be displayed in this nature-based sculpture program at the State Botanical Gardens in Clemson, South Carolina.  The website offers artist blogs, pictures, and a book on the program that is set to be released in the near future. Richard Topolski, psychology, published research titled Soldiers’ Toolbox for Developing Tactics, Techniques, and Procedures (TTP). The report is featured on the front page of the U.S. Army’s military gaming website. Dr. Topolski, along with ASU undergraduate student Zac Martin, also presented research on Moral Dilemma: Choosing Between the Emotional Dog and the Rational Pal at the Association for Psychological Science’s annual meeting in Boston, Mass. Joining them at the meeting was Nicole Rossi, psychology, who also presented her research..
