Members of the board of HOPE PLUS, Inc., were named recipients of Augusta State University’s 2010 President’s Award—the highest honor bestowed by the president in recognition of service, dedication, and leadership to the university. The award was presented at the annual President’s Club reception, which was held May 6 at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Charles Anderson.
HOPE PLUS, a group formed by Mr. Vic Mills, CEO of Blanchard & Calhoun Commercial, enables selected students, who are eligible or nearly eligible for the HOPE Scholarship but lack the financial means, to attend ASU.
The program incorporates the support of community philanthropists who help fund expenses not provided by the HOPE Scholarship, such as food, school supplies, clothing, health care, and transportation. Students are housed at ASU’s University Village where they build a peer support system and also receive mentoring and support from members of the board, which is led by Dr. Larry Hornsby.
The first recipients—eight students—entered the program in 2007 and will be seniors in the fall. Five students were selected for fall 2010 enrollment.
