Family Fun Fair
The Augusta State University Literacy Center will present two events for literacy in June. Its annual Fun Fair will be held on Wednesday, June 2, in the Grove outside Maxwell Theatre with an arts and crafts learning experience for children from 9:15-11:45 a.m. Also at 9:30 a.m., the Patchwork Players will present two stage productions featuring the Aesop’s Fables The Boy Who Cried Wolf, The Ant and The Grasshopper, and The Dog and the Bone. The productions will be held in the Maxwell Theatre with the first show beginning at 9:30 a.m. and a second performance at 10:30 a.m. For more information on these events, call ASU’s Literacy Center at 706-733-7043.
Library fines and fees
ASU faculty, staff, and students may now use ASU eMall online to pay Reese Library fees and fines. To access this option, go to ASU’s homepage, select the letter “E” in the alphabetical directory, and click the eMall, ASU link. You also may go to gil.aug.edu to review your library GIL account for any fines or fees. For more information, call 706-737-1744.
ASU gets fit
The JSAC Fitness Center will be available to faculty and staff in June and July during the hours of 6:30 a.m.-10:30 p.m., Monday through Friday; 9 a.m.-5p.m., Saturday; and 1:30-9:30 p.m., Sunday. The cost is $25/month and must be paid in the Business Office in Fanning Hall. Checks should be made payable to Augusta State University. Take your receipt to the Student Activities Office to have your JagCard activated for access to the exercise center. Please note that the fee will not be prorated for those who pay after the first of each month.
Board of Regent’s dependent audit
The second phase of the Board of Regents’ Dependent Audit has started, and the BOR has selected Chapman Kelly, an independent auditor, to help verify healthcare plans. According to Walt Alexanderson, director of ASU’s Office of Human Resources, Mr. Kelly has already sent letters to the homes of the University System of Georgia employees who claim dependent coverage in the USG’s medical plans. Faculty and staff who receive this notification should review it carefully and supply appropriate documentation to verify a dependent’s eligibility. Counseling Center Summer Expo
The Counseling Center will be offering free seminars to faculty, staff, and students in its 2010 Summer Expo. The first session, Money Management for College Students, will be held on Thursday, June 10, at 11 a.m. in the JSAC Butler Room. On Tuesday, July 13, at 11 a.m. in the JSAC Butler Room, learn how to cope with stress in the workshop Stress Management: What is it and how do I do it? The final session, Summertime Study Skills, will be held on Wednesday, June 30, at noon in the Boykin-Wright Hall Classroom. For more information, call 706-737-1471.
Orientation sessions offered in June
Representatives of academic departments and campus resource offices will present information for new freshmen entering Augusta State in fall semester at an orientation session on Friday, June 4. Orientation helps bridge the gap between high school and college and gives students an overview of the services and resources of ASU as well as the responsibilities of being a student here. Students learn their way around campus, have a chance to get acquainted with other new students, and learn about the many programs and opportunities at ASU. Public Safety collects items
Don’t throw away those old cell phones and eyeglasses. Put them to good use by donating them to Public Safety. They also collect individual, motel-size toiletry items. Cell phones and toiletry items are then donated to the Augusta Domestic Violence Intervention Center. The eyeglasses are given to the local Lions Club. Items may be dropped off in the lobby of the Public Safety building.
Financial Aid workshop
The Financial Aid office will present a free financial aid workshop on Tuesday, June 15, at 6 p.m. in Boykin-Wright Hall. The event is open to prospective and current students, parents, and individuals needing more information on the financial aid process. For more information, call 706-737-1431.
ASU Campus Dining expands Summer Hours of Operation
ASU Campus Dining has expanded the summer hours of operation when classes are in session. Allgood Snack Bar will be open Monday-Thursday, 10 a.m.-5 p.m., and the JSAC Food Court will be open Monday-Friday, 8 a.m.-2 p.m.
Long term health insurance to be offered
Beginning in fall 2010, ASU will offer a long term care insurance program through Prudential Insurance Company of America. For insurance purposes, long term care is for persons in need of assistance due to their inability to perform two or more activities of daily living such as bathing, dressing, toileting, eating, or moving in and out of bed. The policy is designed to pay a specific amount of money for a limited amount of time. Human Resources, working with Prudential, will begin to provide information this summer on the long term care coverage that will be available.
Board of Regents issues new Amorous Relationship Policy
The Board of Regents has updated the policy on amorous relationships. The pursuit of an amorous relationship by faculty or staff with an undergraduate they are teaching or supervising is prohibited. If such an amorous relationship exists or is started, the person in the supervisory position must recuse themselves from any decision affecting employment, instruction, or academic standing of the subordinate. Each institution also must have a procedure for reporting that an employee is involved in an amorous relationship with a person under their direct authority or supervision. Department experiences student growth
The Department of History, Anthropology, and Philosophy is pleased to announce an eight percent growth in majors in 2009-10 over the previous academic year.
According to department chair Hubert van Tuyll, this means the department is fulfilling the university’s strategic goal of increasing its proportion of upper division students. “This is a tribute to the department’s faculty” says Dr. van Tuyll, “and it reflects the increasing awareness that the study of history provides graduates with many of the skills needed in today’s economy.”
Athletes help literacy effort
Several ASU players on the men’s basketball team distributed dictionaries and coloring books to children at Barton Chapel Elementary School. Their participation supported the South Augusta Rotary Club’s literacy effort, which is being assisted by Pam Lightsey, JagCard Office.
