The 2009 National Principal of the Year, Mark D. Wilson, will be the keynote speaker at the annual Impacting Student Learning Partner School Conference on Saturday, March 20, in University Hall. Registration begins at 8 a.m., and educational sessions will follow throughout the day in University Hall.
Dr. Wilson, principal and teacher at Morgan County High School, believes that the key to success is passionate engagement of students in learning and that teachers are the inspiration for such engagement.
Selected for the honor by the National Association of Secondary School Principals and MetLife, his accomplishments include implementing groundbreaking methods to increase student achievement, increasing the school’s graduation rate by double-digits, and narrowing the achievement gap between Caucasian and African-American students in English and language arts.
“Participants will find helpful tools for implementing new ideas and innovative methods for all students of diverse needs, grade levels, and areas of academic preparation,” says Ronnie Harrison, conference coordinator and assistant professor in the Department of Teacher Education.
More than 50 sessions will be presented by partner school teachers and ASU students as they address issues relevant to student achievement. Topics to be discussed include thinking maps, closing the achievement gap, differentiated strategies, and high tech instruction in the special education classroom.
The conference is free and open to the public. For more information, call Mr. Harrison in the teacher education department at 706-667-4500.
