ASU Men’s Basketball tops first region poll
Augusta State is ranked first in the first Southeast Region poll of the 2009-10 regular season. The Jaguars are one of four Peach Belt Conference schools to appear in the first regional rankings, joining Georgia College & State, Francis Marion, and North Georgia. ASU owns a 2-0 record against the trio. The top eight teams in the final Southeast Region poll of the regular season will earn a trip to the NCAA Tournament.
“From day one, we’ve taken a lot of pride in who we play and the quality of our schedule,” says head coach Dip Metress. “It prepares you as the season goes along and definitely benefits you down the stretch each year. There’s a ways to go in the regular season, but it’s a nice position to be in.”
The men’s basketball squad dropped two spots in the national rankings, slipping to No. 8 in the ninth NABC/Coaches Poll of the 2009-10 season.
Jaguars tie with GCSU to finish third in Peach Belt Conference
Augusta State was picked to finish third in the 2010 softball preseason poll, according to a vote by the league’s head coaches.
North Georgia was picked to finish first and received nine of a possible 10 first-place votes to finish with 99 points, outdistancing Francis Marion in second place. Augusta State and GCSU were tied for third while Armstrong Atlantic State was fifth, one point ahead of USC Aiken in sixth.
Last season, Augusta State returned to the NCAA tournament and has made the post-season field in two of the last three years. For 2010, the Lady Jaguars return six starters among their position players and three of the top four pitchers from last season’s squad that posted a 34-21 record. Among the returners is PBC Freshman of the Year Kacee Camp at shortstop and All-Conference Division Player Jessica Thornton.
The Jaguars open their 2010 schedule on Saturday, Feb. 6, against Alderson-Broaddus in Aiken, S.C., at 2 p.m.
