Life of the Mind Series

Civic Engagement is defined as working to make a difference in the civic life of our communities and developing the combination of knowledge, skills, values, and motivation to make that difference. The Augusta State community will examine the concept of civic engagement as part of this year’s Life of the Mind series.

The series kicked off in January with a special presentation by Dr. Michael Trimble, an internationally renowned forensic anthropologist who discussed his role in the trial of Saddam Hussein.

On Monday, Feb. 1, in 170 University Hall, the film, Examined Life, pulls philosophy out of academic journals and classroom, and puts it back on the street. Filmmaker Astra Taylor accompanies some of today’s most influential thinkers on a series of unique excursions through places and spaces that hold meaning for them and their ideas. This film also reveals philosophy’s power to transform the way individuals see the world. A discussion follows the film.

Other films to be viewed and discussed at 7 p.m. in 170 University Hall include:
February 9 – All the President’s Men
March 2 – V for Vendetta
April 13 – A Civil Action

A panel discussion on Plato’s Gorgias will be held on Tuesday, Feb. 23, at 7 p.m. in the JSAC Ballroom. Panelists will include Steve Weiss, associate professor, and Woody Belangia, instructor, of the Department of History, Anthropology, and Philosophy, and Brian Armstrong, instructor in the Department of English and Foreign Languages.

Other Life of the Mind events include:
March 9 – Small group discussions with author Adam Shepard.
March 13 – Field trip to Phinizy Swamp.
April 1 – The American Voice. Performance and music focusing on political activity and the Harlem Renaissance, Beat, and Slam poets.  5:30 p.m., 170 University Hall.
April 16 – Film. The Augusta Commons.  6 p.m., Barnard Amphitheatre.
