SAAB Chapter Information Meeting
Faculty and staff are invited to provide input into the formation of a chapter of the Student African American Brotherhood (SAAB) on campus. Dr. Tyronen Bledsoe, founder and executive director of SAAB, will facilitate a discussion on Thursday, Feb. 4, in Washington Hall Dome Room. If you cannot attend and would like to assist students in forming the organization, contact Karen Mobley, director of Minority Advising. A similar campus group, Talented Tenth, will form under the umbrella of the national SAAB organization.
EPA Campus Audit
The university will be the subject of an Environmental Protection Agency audit March 3-5. This is part of a nationwide effort to ensure that colleges and universities are in compliance with EPA guidelines. This is the first audit of this nature ever on this campus. Any chemicals should be properly labeled, handled, stored, or disposed of. “Please remember that containers storing any liquid or dry chemical must have the original label from the manufacturer securely attached. If chemicals have been re-packaged, poured into another container, or the original label has been damaged (torn, smudged, etc.) they must have appropriate NFPA labels attached,” says Therese Rosier, associate vice president for plant operations. Contact the Physical Plant at 706-737-1590 for additional information.
ASU faculty members tapped to join PKP
Each spring, top juniors and seniors are invited to become members of the Honor Society of Phi Kappa Phi. The honor is accompanied by faculty members performing a tapping ceremony to these students in the presence of their classmates. This year, that honor was extended to faculty initiates as five faculty were tapped for membership into the Society in the presence of their peers at January’s Faculty Meeting: Chris Bourdouvalis, political science; Rick Davis, communications and professional writing; Tim Sadenwasser, English and foreign languages; Michael Bishku, history, anthropology, and philosophy; and Carol Rychly, mathematics and computer science.
Phi Kappa Phi is the nation’s oldest, largest, and most selective honor society for all academic disciplines. Its chapters are on more than 300 campuses in the United States, Puerto Rico, and the Philippines. Each year, approximately 30,000 members are initiated.
Construction update
Even as Master Planning for future campus growth gets underway, renovation and construction projects continue. According to Therese Rosier, assistant vice president for plant operations:
“The water main break behind Reese Library that had resulted in a partial closure of a parking lot has now been repaired, and the parking lot is open; Studio B, which housed artist Janice Williams, is being renovated for business, and it is about 60 percent completed. Procurement is scheduled to move into the building around April 1.”
Bellevue Annex renovation has been completed, and ROTC will move in temporarily while Galloway Hall is being renovated. That move also is scheduled for April 1. Construction is underway at Galloway Hall to renovate it for Testing and Disabilities Services, and that move will take place around March 15. Renovations on the bookstore begin the first week in February; however, it will remain open on a limited basis; and The Maxwell Theatre will be under construction from early July through the first week in September, and that work is now out for bid.”
