Tunisia Williams, assistant director in Augusta State’s Office of Public Relations and Publications, has been named recipient of the Staff Excellence Award for Fall 2009.
ASU’s Staff Advisory Council presented Ms. Williams the award on Dec. 18. Her work ethic, dedication, and personality were cited by colleagues as reasons she deserves the award. A “real asset to the university” is how the director, Kathy Schofe, describes Ms. Williams. As an ’03 alumnus, current student, and staff member, she has an insider’s knowledge of the university, which makes her work with the media and external community particularly valuable, says Ms. Schofe.
“Her job is so varied and involves so many components—communications, marketing, media relations, special events, and basically anything any department or office needs us to do—and she does it all willingly and well,” she says.
Ms. Williams says what she loves most about her job are the people and being able to express her creativity through writing. “I also like the variety—it’s never routine,” she adds.
Ms. Williams serves on a number of university committees including the Homecoming, Lyceum Series, and Black History Committees. Among her responsibilities are supervising and mentoring student workers and interns as well as some of the public relations staff. She joined the university four years ago as an Information Specialist.
The Beaufort, S.C., native is currently enrolled in the university’s Master’s of Education in Counseling program, and she will complete her degree in May. When Ms. Williams is not working, she enjoys traveling, singing show tunes, and spending time with her family and her three dogs. She is very active in her church and is the Girl Scout Leader of Troop 20779.
“It is an honor to even be considered for this award, and to be chosen, is very special,” says Ms. Williams.
