Clint Bryant, director of athletics, has taken on the role of interim head women’s basketball coach following the reassignment Dec. 17 of head coach Tes Sobomehin.
Mr. Bryant indicated he would take over the Lady Jaguar program on an interim basis for the remainder of the season, while a search committee is formed. Assistant coaches Deo Ngulela and Deidre Jones will remain as part of the coaching staff.
Ms. Sobomehin will be reassigned to a position within the university.
“We’ve reached a stage within our program where we feel it’s necessary to make a change,” Mr. Bryant says. “It’s a difficult task to make a decision of this magnitude during the season, but this represented the best time to do so. It boils down to a sense of direction and leadership, and this decision was made with the best interests of our university, our athletic department, and our student-athletes in mind. I would like to thank Coach Sobomehin for her efforts over the last 18 months.
“I’m excited about the opportunity to lead the Lady Jags over the next few months–it will be a tremendous challenge,” adds Mr. Bryant. “We will work hard on and off the court; we will play together as a team, and we will represent Augusta State in a positive manner. I’m looking forward to sharing my philosophy of the game and, most importantly, establishing team goals for the remainder of the season. My hope is to see some overall improvement within the program by season’s end.”
The former head coach at Kalamazoo College in Kalamazoo, Mich., Ms. Sobomehin was introduced by Bryant as the seventh head women’s basketball coach in school history on June 24, 2008.
In 38 games, Sobomehin led the Lady Jags to a 6-32 overall record and a 3-19 mark in Peach Belt Conference play. During her first season at the helm of the program in 2008-09, ASU posted a 5-23 overall record and went 3-17 in the PBC. Through 10 games this season, the Lady Jags are 1-9 overall.
A 2000 graduate of the University of Virginia, Ms. Sobomehin spent three seasons at the helm of the Kalamazoo program. Prior to Kalamazoo, Ms. Sobomehin spent two seasons as an assistant coach at Oberlin College in Oberlin, Ohio. She also served as resident director in the Department of Residential Education and as an instructor in Oberlin’s Department of Health and Physical Education.
