Lillie Johnson, chair of the Department of English and Foreign Languages, was recognized as a courageous trailblazer during the University System of Georgia’s Diversity Summit. Dr. Johnson was one of two individuals recognized during the summit.
A valedictorian of Augusta College, Dr. Johnson was among the first African-Americans to receive her bachelor’s degree from the college during the 1960s. In 2003, Dr. Johnson was honored by the university’s Alumni Association for her outstanding leadership and academic integrity.
Dr. Johnson has received the 2008 FLAG Presidential Certificate Award for her demonstrated, genuine, personal, and professional commitment to foreign languages as an essential component of a university curriculum. She also has been a strong advocate for foreign languages at ASU and in the community by providing support, funding, and guidance to expand the foreign language program.
Throughout her more than 30 years of service at Augusta State, Dr. Johnson has published numerous articles and has conducted various workshops and seminars. She has served as a faculty marshal while on the Faculty Policies Committee, chaired the Committee on Promotion and Tenure, and served as president of the university’s chapter of the National Honor Society of Phi Kappa Phi. She also has served as a member on numerous other university committees.
Dr. Johnson received her master’s degree from the University of Chicago and doctoral degree from the University of Georgia. She is a member of the National Honor Society of Phi Kappa Phi, Alpha Mu Gamma, and the collegiate Foreign Language Honor Society.
