After many years of discussion and review, Augusta State has received the approval needed to offer more options to students who may be considering a career in the field of kinesiology and health science.
In August, the Board of Regents for the University System of Georgia approved the university’s request to allow nonteacher certification tracks to be added to the curriculum of the undergraduate and graduate programs in the Department of Kinesiology and Health Science. The department will now offer these tracks under a separate degree: the Bachelor of Science in Kinesiology (BSK).
As a result of the “splitting off” of the nonteacher certification tracks, the institution’s undergraduate degree programs will consist of two degree choices: the Bachelor of Science in Education (with a major in Health and Physical Education with a teacher certification track) and a Bachelor of Science in Kinesiology (with a major in Kinesiology). The BSK degree offers tracks in Health Science, Exercise and Sport Science, and Pre-Physical Therapy.
The changes made in the graduate program will result in the addition of a Master of Science with a major in Kinesiology degree. Students interested in teacher preparation certification at the graduate level will be advised to complete the existing Master of Education with a major in Curriculum and Instruction.
According to Karen Wish, chair of the Department of Kinesiology and Health Science, the purpose of these changes is to enable students and their employers to clearly differentiate between programs that are designed to lead to either teacher certification or other health science careers.
“Since the introduction of these changes to our program, we have received positive feedback from both current and potential students,” says Dr. Wish. “We are very excited to offer these tracks to our students, and we know that this will allow us to better serve them and the community.”
