BSN gains candidacy status for accreditation

The National League for Nursing Accrediting Commission (NLNAC) has awarded candidacy status toward full accreditation for Augusta State’s new Bachelor of Science in Nursing degree program.

According to Charlotte Price, chair of the Department of Nursing, ASU may only receive full accreditation upon the graduation in spring 2011 of the first group of BSN students who successfully pass the National Council Licensure Examination-Registered Nurse (NCLEX-RN) exam.

Nursing students will be introduced to new aspects of the BSN curriculum including courses on community health, spirituality, cultural diversity, and nursing and information technology. Additional leadership and research courses are also being added.

“We are excited about this program, because we know it will definitely open more doors for our students,” says Dr. Price. “With this new curriculum, our students will receive a broader nursing education, which will better prepare them for their careers in the medical field.”

Augusta State previously offered an associate’s degree in nursing. In 2008, the University System of Georgia Board of Regents approved the four-year undergraduate nursing program, which is designed to give students an in-depth education in nursing and liberal arts. Earlier this year, the Georgia Board of Nursing granted approval for Augusta State to begin enrolling students in the new program, and the department expects to admit 40 to 50 students for the Spring 2010 semester.
