Jurgen Brauer, Hull College of Business, is wrapping up his 18-month leave from ASU. He will be back on campus for the spring 2010 semester to teach in the business school and the Honors Program. During his absence, he held visiting professorships in Australia, Thailand, Colombia, and the University of Colorado, Boulder; gave invited lectures in Australia, New Zealand, Indonesia, Japan, and Northern Ireland; and served four months as Research Director to develop a business plan and start up a new multi-million dollar foundation on global business, global peace, and global governance in Boulder, Colo. He also published a new book War and Nature: The Environmental Consequences of War as well as published the paperback edition of Castles, Battles, and Bombs, which he co-authored with Hubert van Tuyll, history, anthropology, and philosophy. Dr. Brauer received over $100,000 in research grants, received contracts for two more books, had six book chapters published or accepted, published two journal articles, and produced several issues of The Economics of Peace and Security Journal. He was also invited to join the Research Committee of the Institute for Economics and Peace in Sydney, Australia, and the Nonkilling Economics Research Committee, Center for Global Nonkilling in Honolulu, Hawaii, and joined the Advisory Editorial Board of the International Journal of Economic Development, Conflict and Peace Science.
Clint Bryant, athletics, was appointed the president of the Kiwanis Club of Augusta.
Tom Deering, educational leadership, counseling, and special education, will present two papers titled Political Correctness and the University and Let’s Forget About Standards at the Critical Questions in Education Conference in St. Louis, Mo.
Wayne Lord, educational leadership, counseling, and special education, will present Essential Components of Effective Policy: Examples from One Case Study; Leading Change in Gifted Education; NAGC Standards: Archway for Professional Development; and University Network Roundtable on Professional Standards for Gifted Programs at the National Association for Gifted Children’s 56th Annual Conference in St. Louis, Mo. November 4-8.
Dr. Lord was also reappointed to the National Council for Accreditation of Teacher Education Board of Examiners to serve a three-year term.
Saundra Reinke, political science and MPA director, and MPA student Gretchen Keneson presented at the Southeastern Conference on Public Administration in Louisville, Ky., in October. Under the direction of Dr. Reinke, Ms. Keneson will present the results of an assessment completed for Lincoln County to demonstrate the need for an emergency warning system at the Georgia Political Science Association Annual Meeting in Pine Mountain, Ga., on Nov. 14.
Brian Rust, art, conducted demonstrations during a workshop in Columbia, S.C., on rammed earth, clay, and cement techniques as well as other nontraditional uses of good old Georgia and South Carolina red clay as an art medium in October.
