The American Council on the Teaching of Foreign Languages has recognized Jana Sandarg, professor of Spanish, with its Lifetime Achievement Award. The honor was announced by State Superintendent of Schools Kathy Cox on Aug. 13.  The Florence Steiner Award for Leadership in Foreign Language Education is given annually to an individual who demonstrates excellence in teaching, service, and instructional leadership at the local, state, regional, and national levels.

Dr. Sandarg says she was thrilled and surprised to learn she had been selected for the award. “To be recognized by a national organization is an honor,” she says.  “This is a wonderful experience for me, and it makes me feel good about the hard work that I’ve done throughout the years. It is also a great feeling to know that I am representing ASU; I want others to know that our institution does great things in the area of foreign language.”

Dr. Sandarg has taught Spanish at ASU for 28 years, and she conducts a six-week study abroad trip to Spain each summer. She has served as chair of the Board of Regents Foreign Language Advisory Committee, president of the Foreign Language Association of Georgia, and president of the Georgia chapter of the American Association of Teachers of Spanish and Portuguese. She is a board member of the CSRA’s Foreign Language Association for International Rapport. Dr. Sandarg also co-founded the Hispanic Organization, the Asociacion Cultural Hispanoamericana, in the Augusta area.

In 1990, Dr. Sandarg was named Professor of the Year by the Foreign Language Association of Georgia, and ASU awarded her the Outstanding Faculty Member of the Year award in 2006.

Dr. Sandarg earned her bachelor, master’s, and doctoral degrees from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.
