Campus Closed
Augusta State will be closed Monday and Tuesday, Sept. 7 and 8. All classes, services, and labs will be closed, with the exception of a student computer lab in 131 University Hall. Monday’s closure is in observance of Labor Day and Tuesday’s closure is a furlough day for faculty and staff. Admittance into University Hall and lab will require a valid JagCard.

9/11 Ceremony
In a ceremony on Friday, Sept. 11, at 11 a.m., the university will honor the approximately 3,000 men, women, and children who were killed in the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorists attacks. The ceremony will be held at the Flagpole in front of Payne Hall and will feature Dr. Saundra Reinke, director of ASU’s MPA program and a former U.S. Air Force officer. Oral History of the Arsenal
Oral histories are being collected from Augustans having memories of the Augusta Arsenal. If you know of someone who worked or lived at the arsenal, please have them call 706-737-1444 to share their remembrances. Artifacts are also welcome. The project will become part of the university’s history museum.

Pig Out
Chicken fingers, burgers, and hot dogs will be served at the Student Activities’ Pig Out on Wednesday, Sept. 16, from 11 a.m.-2 p.m. in the JSAC Breezeway. Faculty and staff volunteers are needed. Contact Student Activities at 706-737-1619 for information.

Constitution Day
Augusta State will celebrate Constitution Day on Thursday, Sept. 17, from 11 a.m.-1 p.m. in the JSAC Breezeway. Students will be given copies of the U. S. Constitution as well as fun facts about the historical document.

Department of Art Faculty Show
Campus and the public are invited to view an exhibit of Faculty Art through Sept. 26 in the New Space Gallery in Washington Hall as part of the city’s second annual Westobou Festival. A reception will be held for the faculty artists on Thursday, Sept. 17, at 5 p.m. in the New Space Gallery. For more information call 706-667-4888.

Nursing Hosts Open House
The Department of Nursing will host two open houses and information sessions in September for individuals interested in the new Bachelor of Science in Nursing degree: Friday, Sept. 4, at 4 p.m., and Wednesday, Sept. 16 , at 3 p.m. in 170 University Hall.

All pre-nursing students, registered nurses pursuing a bachelor’s degree, or anyone interested in nursing is encouraged to attend and meet nursing faculty and current students, ask questions, and learn more about the new Bachelor of Science in Nursing degree at ASU. Youth Leadership Columbia County to visit campus
The Columbia County Youth Leadership program will bring about 30 students to campus on Thursday, Sept. 10, to learn more about education as well as the history of the institution and Augusta Arsenal. The students will lunch in the JSAC, tour the History Walk and Museum, and participate in discussions with Julie Goley, director of the Career Center, and a panel discussion on education with Katherine Sweeney, registrar and director of admissions; Willene Holmes, director of Financial Aid; Eddie Howard, director of student activities; and Joyce Jones, vice president of student services. ASU Librarian displays artwork in Reese Library
Bringing alive the tales of her ancestors, Government Document Librarian Yadira Payne will display her artwork titled Borikén on the 2nd floor of ASU’s Reese Library beginning Wednesday, Sept. 2.

The collection consists of 17 acrylic paintings that illustrate the beauty and dichotomous history of Puerto Rico. In this two-month exhibit, Ms. Payne says she has given the viewer  a glimpse into her heritage which consists of both the culture and struggles found within the Taino Indian, African slave, and Spanish cultures. Although, Ms. Payne has designed several commissioned paintings in her career, this will be the first time her work will be displayed in a large venue.

Video Games Live
The ASU Choir will join the Symphony Orchestra Augusta in a performance of Video Games Live on Friday, Sept. 25, at 7:30 p.m. in the Bell Auditorium. This event is part of the city’s annual Westobou Festival.

“Video games have risen to the level of art, which will be experienced in this concert,” says J. William Hobbins, choir director. The symphony and the ASU Choir will perform music of the most popular video games of all time along with exclusive video footage and music arrangements, synchronized lighting, solo performers, electronic percussionists, live action and unique interactive segments, all contributing to an explosive entertainment experience.

ASU’s College of Education hosts Professional Development School workshop
ASU’s College of Education will host over 100 area teachers, administrators, and professors on campus Sept. 11 in a Professional Development School workshop. The educators come from PDS schools in 9 high school, 9 middle school, and 31 elementary PDS schools in six counties—Burke, Columbia, Jefferson, McDuffie, Richmond, and Warren. ASU education majors are assigned to PDS schools where master teachers help determine what apprentice teachers need to learn.

ASU’s Phi Kappa Phi chapter recognized as a Chapter of Excellence
Augusta State’s chapter of the Honor Society of Phi Kappa Phi was one of five campus chapters throughout the country recently recognized as a Chapter of Excellence; thirteen others received Chapters of Merit recognition. These awards are given to chapters that not only comply with the Society’s national standards, but also demonstrate an active commitment to Phi Kappa Phi’s standards of excellence. By receiving the Chapter of Merit and Chapter of Excellence distinctions, these Phi Kappa Phi chapters are being recognized as thriving organizations that meet frequently, hold annual initiations and apply frequently for the Society’s select scholarships, grants, and fellowships.
