The Metro Spirit published its list of the most influential people in Augusta, and ASU President William A. Bloodworth, Jr., was named 15th most influential. Among the others named in the top 20 were two ASU alumni: Superior Court Judge Danny Craig and Georgia State Senator Ed Tarver. A survey of readers determines the names and order of the most influential.
War and Nature: The Environmental Consequences of War in a Globalized World is the latest release authored by Jurgen Brauer, Hull College of Business. In his book, Dr. Brauer addresses the environmental impact of war and the importance of there being an economic evaluation of environmental damage in order to properly claim restitution from a court of international law.
Lee Ann Caldwell, Center for the Study of Georgia History, has been selected to sit on the panel of judges for the Augusta Museum of History’s Annual Holiday Gingerbread Village contest in November. This is a gingerbread house competition featuring confectionary replicas of historic structures in the Central Savannah River Area.
Julie Goley, Career Center, presented at the Columbia County Chamber of Commerce Professional Development Luncheon in July on Do you have an S on your chest? Strategies for Women in Managing a Successful Career-Life Balance. Ms. Goley also served as a commentator for the same topic with the Buzz on Biz radio show with Neil Gordon on 1630AM. Melissa Hudson and Amber Boland, Career Center, were selected to attend the United States Marine Corps Educators’ Workshop in Quantico, Va., in July. The week-long camp is an opportunity for career planning professionals across the United States to learn firsthand what college recruits can expect for the officer training and internship programs.
Marsha Loda, Hull College of Business, recently presented a paper at the International Academy of Culture, Tourism and Hospitality Research biannual meeting in Vienna, Austria. Her paper focuses on a marketing research experiment and is titled, Putting Credibility to the Test: the Web versus Publicity. The paper is co-authored by Kenneth Backman of Clemson University. Dr. Loda’s trip was made possible by the Hull College of Business Foundation.
The College Board’s Advancement Placement Program selected Charles Jenks, associate professor in ASU’s Department of Teacher Education, to participate in the annual reading and scoring of the board’s AP examination earlier this year. Dr. Jenks is one of over 10,000 AP readers from universities and high schools chosen for the evaluation of millions of examinations from 37 AP courses. The AP Program, sponsored by the College Board, gives more than one million high school students the chance to take college-level courses and examinations, and based on their performances, to obtain college credit and/or advanced placement when they enter college.
After 23 years of service, Don Howard, associate professor in the Hull College of Business, has decided to step down as board chairman for the Walton Rehabilitation Health System. During his years of leadership, Mr. Howard was able to achieve several goals including Walton’s independence in 2008. Walton CEO Dennis Skelley describes Mr. Howard as a “can-do and get-the-job-done leader” and describes his work ethic as “remarkable and passionate.” Before becoming chairman, Mr. Howard was involved in Walton as a University Hospital board member. And although he is relinquishing his position, he says he will continue to be a part of the system’s board.
