Madgen selected to represent Australia
ASU basketball All-American Ben Madgen has been selected to play in the 24th annual World University Games July 1-12 in Belgrade, Serbia. A native of Australia, Madgen was previously named NCAA Southeast Region Player-of-the-Year, first team All-Southeast Region, and first-team All-Peach Belt Conference. He was named to the NCAA Southeast Regional All-Tourna-ment team and was voted the Peach Belt Conference Tournament’s Most Valuable Player.
Wilkerson drafted by Boston Red Sox
ASU junior outfielder Shannon Wilkerson was selected by the Boston Red Sox in the eighth round of the 2009 Major League Baseball Draft. This makes the Dacula, Ga., native the highest draft pick in the 45-year-history of the Jaguar baseball program. Wilkerson’s previous achievements include being named the Division II National Player-of-the-Year and the Peach Belt Conference Player-Of-The-Year.
Norlander earns honor
ASU golfer Henrik Norlander, a sophomore from Danderyd, Sweden, was selected to play on the European team in the Palmer Cup, a Ryder-Cup style competition that pits American collegiate golfers against their counterparts from Europe. In this year’s tournament, the European team won. Norlander has been named to the PING All-Southeast Region team by the Golf Coaches Association of America. With his selection, he is now a candidate for All America honors.
Jaguars make the grade
Augusta State’s student-athletes have excelled both in their sports and in the classroom during the spring 2009 semester. Seventy-three student-athletes were named to the Athletic Director’s Honor Roll, with seven receiving a 4.0 grade point average. Five of ASU’s 10 varsity sports had a team GPA of over 3.0, and over 55 percent of all student-athletes had a GPA of at least 3.0.
