It was at an early age that Deltrye Holt, assistant professor in ASU’s Department of Mathematics and Computer Science, says she learned the significance of working hard and getting an education.
Ms. Holt says it was her grandmother’s words and actions that instilled in her family the importance of achieving their goals and dreams. Although her grandmother was only able to obtain an eighth-grade education, she always wanted her children to exceed her in school.
“My family believes that each generation should do better than the last,” says Ms. Holt. “I remember stories about how my grandmother would study and do her math homework by the light of the fireplace. This showed me that in spite of it all, she was always determined to do well in school.”
With this in mind, it is no surprise that the succeeding generation produced three teachers, with one eventually becoming a principal.
Having a lot to live up to, Ms. Holt was very serious about getting a good education. In 1983, she graduated from A.R. Johnson Health Science and Engineering Magnet High School and enrolled in Clark Atlanta University as a computer science major. In 1987, she graduated from CAU with a bachelor’s degree in mathematics. She then enrolled into the University of Georgia where she obtained her master’s degree in mathematics.
“I decided that after I got my master’s degree, I would come home,” she says. “After moving back to Augusta, I taught high school math for a year, but it didn’t fit my personality. A position at Augusta State became available in 1991, so I applied and was accepted.”
After her first year at ASU, she knew that being a math professor was the perfect occupation for her. Ms Holt’s passion for teaching, along with her desire to have each student learn and gain an appreciation for math, has led her to identify each individual student’s learning style.
During her time off, Ms. Holt says she enjoys spending quality time with her husband, Henry, and her two children, Hank, 13, and Jared, 8.
“I enjoy outdoor activities with my boys and my husband,” she says. “I like basketball, riding bikes, and riding a RipStik, which has two wheels and is a combination between a surf board and a skate board.”
Despite her many achievements, Ms. Holt says her greatest accomplishment in life is raising two good children. “I’m very proud of my sons,” she says. “They are well-mannered, and it makes me happy that other people enjoy meeting and working with them.”
