Staff Profile – Ralph Herndon

By Lakeisha Forbes, contributing writer

Ralph Herndon, the assistant director of special events for Media Services, has a history with Augusta State University that spans over two decades.

Mr. Herndon, a talented athlete, attended Augusta College on a baseball scholarship. “It’s a pretty cool thing that a college, and specifically a baseball program, thought I was worthy of that,” he says. “I never took that lightly, and I always considered it an honor.”

According to Mr. Herndon, he played on the team throughout his college career. He takes pride in being a part of the 1980 and 1981 seasons because, in his opinion, it was two of the best baseball seasons that ASU has ever had.

Besides allowing him to play a sport he loves, the scholarship also allowed Mr. Herndon to major in broadcasting.

“I have always been interested in cameras and photography,” he says. “That led to me doing a lot of video work. One thing just led to another, and it was natural for me to take broadcasting as a major. It just came second nature to me.”

After graduating in 1987, Mr. Herndon worked at two different television stations, but in 1995, he found himself back at ASU, this time as an employee. After holding several job positions at ASU, Mr. Herndon accepted his current position in media services as assistant director of special events.

In this position, Mr. Herndon has many responsibilities.  “I coordinate, plan, and schedule any audio-visual or other support from the Media Center for any event on campus that requires it,” he says.

Mr. Herndon says he enjoys working at ASU. “I like my job because of the technology,” he says. Working in Media Services gives him the opportunity to learn cutting-edge technology.

“I like learning new things,” he says. “Also, I’ve made a lot of great friends here. It is kind of unique working in a place where you have a lot of great friends.”

When he’s not at ASU, Mr. Herndon enjoys spending time with his wife, son, step-daughter, and grandson. “Most of my immediate family all live in Augusta. We’re a very close-knit family. We spend a lot of time with each other,” says the Augusta native.
