Jag Outfielder racks up honors
Jaguar outfielder Shannon Wilkerson has been named the nation’s NCAA Division II Player of the Year by the Rawlings/American Baseball Coaches Association, which also selected him for its first-team All-American honor. This follows the Player of the Year awards for the Southeast Region and the Peach Belt Conference. Wilkerson also was named to Rawlings Southeast Regional Gold Glove Team. A junior from Dacula, Ga., he led the PBC with 21 home runs, slugging percentage, hits, triples, and total bases.
Two players named to All-Academic Team
Seniors Jorge Virguez and Chris Tyler have been named to the Peach Belt Conference Baseball All-Academic team, recognizing the outstanding accomplishments of PBC student-athletes in the classroom as well as on the field. Virguez, a senior third baseman and political science major from Lawrenceville, ranked third on the Jaguar baseball team with a .355 batting average. Tyler, senior health & kinesiology major from Warner Robins, Ga., posted a 4-3 record and 4.70 ERA in 16 appearances on the mound for ASU.
Softball Player named Conference Scholar Athlete of the Year
Angi Verbeelen, a 2009 graduate with a degree in kinesiology and health science, was named the Peach Belt Conference’s Scholar-Athlete-Of-The-Year for 2008-09 at a special awards banquet at the league’s annual meetings on Tuesday. The scholar-athlete award is the highest individual award presented by the Peach Belt. She was honored in March at the annual Student Honors Convocation with the the Tommy Werrick Female Student-Athlete of the Year at ASU. She was named to the Dean’s List in 2007 and 2008, Athletic Director’s Honor Roll in 2008 and 2009 and earned PBC Presidential Silver Scholar honors in 2008.
