Faculty Profile – J. Duncan Robertson

By Kara Mauldin, contributing writer

J. Duncan Robertson, professor in the Department of English and Foreign Languages, always calls out a greeting when he passes his students in the hall and is delighted when they respond in French to his traditional greeting of “Bonjour! Ça va bien?”

Although he has taught Spanish and Latin in the past, he says that he feels more comfortable speaking and teaching French. “French has always been my main interest. As a kind of frustrated musician, I’ve always been keenly aware of the oral dimension of the language. I love the music of the language. I went in the direction of something that came easily for me; something for which I have talent,” says Dr. Robertson.

Dr. Robertson has had the opportunity to live in the heart of Paris, and he says that he appreciates all the culture and beauty that is associated with the city.

“It’s quite different from Augusta; something you have to get used to—going everywhere on public transportation and buses, having all the theatres and movies, cafés, restaurants, and shops at your disposal.” He adds wistfully, “I’d like to go back there.”

He says that while abroad it is easier to immerse yourself in the culture of the country if you are able to speak the language. “One makes friends fairly easily if you can speak the language. A number of times, people sitting next to us in a restaurant will strike up a conversation. The next thing you know, they’ve invited us to their home for dinner,” says Dr. Robertson.

He was awarded a grant to study at La Bibliothèque nationale de France, and he was able to complete research for his book, The Medieval Saints’ Lives. His current research also focuses on the Middle Ages.

Dr. Robertson has been a member of the ASU faculty for almost 20 years, and he says his retirement is not too far away. After that, he would like nothing better than to find the time to travel.

Dr. Robertson received his bachelor’s degree from Yale University and his doctoral degree from Princeton University.
