Spring Staff Excellence Awards

Amber Zimmerman, grants and employment administrator, has been named the recipient of the Staff Excellence Award for Spring ‘09.

Augusta State University’s Staff Advisory Council presented Ms. Zimmerman the award after she was nominated by several co-workers in the Career Center for her hard work and dedication. Many of those who have worked with Ms. Zimmerman say it is her personality and work ethic that capture people’s attention.

“Amber is professional, consistent, and dedicated to her work,” says Michelle DeLoach, member of ASU’S Staff Advisory Council. “She continues to help financial aid at peak times for processing; she assists with new student orientations; she is an avid supporter/attendee of our basketball program; and she can always be found working behind the scenes for alumni programs and participating in alumni-sponsored events.”

This is the first time Ms. Zimmerman has been chosen for this award, and she says she is delighted to know that her peers would nominate her for such an accolade.

“I was shocked and very excited to know that I had been selected for this award,” says Ms. Zimmerman.  “Out of all the amazing people we have on this campus, it is an honor to know that I was chosen to have this recognition.”

The ASU alumna says she enjoys helping students with one of the most difficult aspects of the education process, student employment. This involves overseeing ASU’s federal work study program as well as student and graduate assistant programs. When she’s not managing the student employment program, she is also responsible for administering the grants program.

Since she started working at Augusta State 10 years ago, Ms. Zimmerman has continued to be instrumental in bringing new programs to the university. Some of her accomplishments include the campus centralization of graduate assistantships, coordinating the university’s first Student Employment Fair, and initiating the annual supervisor training for student employment as well as the customer service training review for new student hires on campus.

Ms. Zimmerman says she loves her job because she is always meeting new people. “Originally, I planned to become a French teacher, because I loved French in high school; however, while I was going to college, I worked in the business office as a student assistant for two years. My sister worked in the financial aid office at the time, and she told me about this position opening. I applied; I loved the people so much that I decided to stay, and I’ve been here ever since,” she says.

Ms. Zimmerman’s hobbies include cooking, scrapbooking, and sewing. She and husband, Scott, are expecting their first child in November.
