Late professor honored

The late Joseph Greene, Professor Emeritus and the university’s Customer Service Champion, was among the first African American students to attend the institution in the early 1970s. His legacy as a student, faculty member, and administrator is being honored with the creation of awards in his name that will be presented annually at a program hosted by the university’s Minority Advising Program, the Department of Athletics, and the Black Student Union. Professor Greene was a charter member of the Black Student Union and served as its president.

The first presentation of the awards was made at a program held in April at the Jaguar Student Activities Center. The awards and recipients include Mrs. Barney L. Greene, Professor Greene’s wife, who was awarded the Joseph Green Distinguished Citizen Award; Ms. Pamela Ferguson-Haggins, art professor, received the Joseph Greene Distinguished Faculty Award; Ms. Sonya Horne-Holmes, office coordinator in the Office of Institutional Research, was awarded the Joseph Greene Distinguished Staff Award; and Ms. Keturah Jackson, ASU English major, received the Joseph Greene Distinguished Student Award.

Professor Greene passed away in 2007 at the age of 67, after losing his battle with cancer. He had served as the Cree-Walker Professor of Business Administration in the Hull College of Business and as the university’s first Customer Service Champion. He also served as a member of the Board of Regents of the University System of Georgia. Professor Greene first came to Augusta College as a student in 1972, joined the faculty full time in 1991, and was honored by the Alumni Association with its Distinguished Alumnus Award.
