Carol Waggoner-Angleton, Reese Library, was named recipient of a 2009 Brenda S. Banks Educational Workshop Scholarship. It covers registration for a workshop, Grant Writing for Archivists, at the spring meeting of the Society of Georgia Archivists.
The annual Vets to Washington project, which is assisted by ASU JagCard Manager Pam Lightsey, had additional representation on the April visit. Maj. Karen Roe, chair of the Department of Military Science, and Cadets Toby Forbes and Beau Persons accompanied the veterans on the trip.
The following officers in the Public Safety office scored 90 percent or above on the shooting range during the month of March, earning them the Pistol Expert Badge: Sgt. Adcox, Officer Chrissman, Sgt. Edwards, Officer Ford, Chief Cooke, and Lt. Grant.
The Student Employee of the Year Selection Committee has named Lyston Skerritt, Office of Student Activities, as the 2008-2009 Student Employee of the Year. Along with a certificate and a plaque, Skerritt has received $125 JagCard credit. Rebecca White of the Office of Admissions was first runner up and she received a certificate with $75 in JagCard credit. Adam Boudet, Office of Study Abroad, tied with the Career Center’s Eden Vickrey for second runner up. Both Adam and Eden received a certificate and $50 in JagCard credit.
Jurgen Brauer, professor of economics, presented the invited keynote address titled Nonstate Sovereign Entrepreneurship: Application to Violent Social Conflict? at the University of Ulster, Londonderry, Northern Ireland, during March. He also presented at the United Nations University, World Institute for Development Economics Research conference on Entrepreneurship and Conflict. Dr. Brauer is also a juror for the Isaac Roet Prize. The winner of the prize will be announced in June 2009. This year’s theme is Resource Access and World Peace: Policies to Promote Global Stability in View of Growing Scarcity of Nonrenewable Natural Resources. The other members of the jury are Prof. James K. Galbraith, University of Texas; Prof. Cor A.J. Herkströter, University of Amsterdam and former CEO of the Royal Dutch/Shell Group of Companies; Prof. Henk Jager, University of Amsterdam; Mr. Haim Roet, Secretary-General of the Israeli Foundation for Quality Management; and Prof. Joseph E. Stiglitz, Professor at Columbia University, Nobel Laureate.
Several professors across campus made campus presentations in April with a group of scholars from Mid-Sweden University (MSU) including a panel addressing Gender, Families, and Communication, featuring Dr. Wendy Turner, Medieval Families Coping with Disabilities with Tomas Berglund (MSU) Fatherhood in 19th Century Sweden; Dr. Nancy Sutherland, The American Girl: Snapshots, Icons, and Reconstructions; Eva Soderbergh (MSU), The Image of the Girl in the Swedish Picture Book; and Dr. Ruth McClelland-Nugent, Gendering Villainy: Nazism in Wonder Woman Comics. A panel on Reading, Writing, and Regionalisms featured Dr. Wayne Mixon, Responses to Erskine Caldwell and Hedda Friberg Harnesk (MSU) Imitation, Mimicry, Mockery?: John Banville and James Joyce. Dr. Ted Atkinson presented The Impenetrable Lightness of Being in Faulkners Go Down, Moses. Dr. Debbie van Tuyll, presented Civil War Readership and Newspapers, and Anders Olsson (MSU) Managing Diversity: multi-culturality and mono-culturality in relation to American literature. A panel on Violence, Frontiers, and Change featured Borje Harnesk (MSU) Conflict or consensus? Peasant rebellions and the Swedish mode; Magnus Perlestam (MSU) The Face of disobedience: Military obedience and disobedience in the age of Charles XII; and Dr. Hubert van Tuyll Castles, Battles, and Bombs: Warfare and Economics. The presentations also included Professor Michael Searles, The Black Cowboy Story, and a reading by Professor Anthony Kellman.
Head men’s basketball coach Dip Metress made a presentation to the Martinez Evans Rotary Club.
Dr. Robert Parham, arts and sciences, presented his poetry at the April program, Meet the Author, sponsored by Reese Library.
The following faculty members have been elected to the Faculty Policies Committee: Dr. Peter Basciano, Dr. Angela Bratton, Dr. Kim Davies, Dr. Sudha Ratan, Dr. Christine Terry, Dr. Eric Zuckerman, and Dr. Donna Wear. Elected to University Council were Dr. Robert Bledsoe, Dr. Carol Rychly, and Dr. Judi Wilson.
Charles Case and Cameron Lippard, sociology, criminal justice, and social work, have co-authored a paper that will be published in Sociological Inquiry Vol 79 no 2 in May 2009: Humorous Assualts on Patriarchal Ideology.
Ginny Luke, Counseling Center, received the Professional Leadership Award for 2009 from the Georgia College Counseling Association.
Augustine Hammond, political science, served as a panel chair and discussant at the Midwest Political Science Association (MPSA) Annual Conference in Chicago, Ill., from April 2-5, 2009. He also presented a paper at the conference entitled Beyond drug abuse prevention: Drug Abuse Resistance Education (DARE) officers and adolescents’ perceptions of police officers.
