In April, Augusta State University honored some of its most outstanding faculty during the university’s annual Retirement and Recognition ceremony.
The Louis K. Bell Research Award was given to Dr. Kim Davies, professor of sociology and chair of the Department of Sociology, Criminal Justice, and Social Work. Dr. Davies has written and presented extensively on the subjects of women as offenders, violence against women, and homicide, including her 2007 book, The Murder Book: Examining Homicides.
She was the 2001 recipient of the Outstanding Faculty Member Award and before joining Augusta State, she was presented with the Most Supportive Colleague Award at The Ohio State University. She is a Cum Laude graduate with double majors in sociology and women studies, as well as master’s and doctoral degrees in sociology all from The Ohio State University.
Dr. Marsha Loda, assistant professor of marketing in the Hull College of Business, was given the Outstanding Teaching Award. Dr. Loda has served in two of ASU’s colleges, the Hull and the Pamplin College of Arts and Sciences. Before joining the university in 2004, she was the owner of an ad agency in Memphis for 16 years and also served as the director of marketing for one of the largest tourism businesses in North Carolina, Harrah’s Cherokee Casino. Dr. Loda has a PhD in tourism from Clemson University, a master’s degree in communication from the University of Memphis, and a bachelor’s degree in journalism from Memphis State University.
This year, the Richard S. Wallace Distinguished Service Award was presented to Professor James Garvey, chair of the Department of Communications and Professional Writing. Dr. Garvey has been a faculty member at ASU since 1979 and has served on a number of committees as well as serving as the interim chair of Augusta State’s Honors Program, faculty advisor to the Bell Ringer, campus chair of the A Day for ASU campaign, and a member and president of the Honor Society of Phi Kappa Phi.
In 1988, he received the ASU Alumni Association’s Town and Gown Award; in 1994, he was the recipient of the Richard S. Wallace Award; and in 1999, he was named the university’s Outstanding Faculty Member. He earned a bachelor’s degree from the University of Toronto and master and doctoral degrees from the University of Rochester.
