In celebration of Earth Day 2009 and the Earth Day Network’s Green Generation Campaign initiative, Augusta State University’s Recycling and Green committees have teamed up to host forums to create awareness about the importance of protecting the environment.
The event, The State of the Planet, will be held two times on Wednesday, April 22, at noon and 6:30 p.m. in 170 University Hall. Discussion topics will include resource conservation, energy alternatives, global warming, and recycling. Session speakers will include ASU biology professors Brandon Cromer and Charlotte Christy, physics professor Hauke Busch, and the director of ASU’s Office of Grants Administration and Sponsored Programs, Kim Gray.
“We feel it is important for everyone to be aware of the current state of our environment, so we have decided to use this event to educate and advise our community on what they can do to protect the environment,” says Dr. Busch.
Guarding the condition of the global climate has always been a priority for Augusta State, he says. One of the most recent efforts to conserve energy throughout campus was the installing of smart sensor light switches in Science Hall. With this new energy- efficient lighting, Dr. Busch says it will save the university over $1,500 each year.
