When entering the dean’s suite in the College of Education, students are greeted with a warm smile and cheery hello by Andrea Scott, secretary to the dean. As secretary, she is responsible for assisting the dean with administrative functions, maintaining the state and foundation budgets, and answering numerous questions from individuals, both on and off campus.
“I field questions from just about everyone on the campus and in the community when they aren’t sure who they need to call in education,” she says.
Among those who often have questions about the College of Education are currently enrolled and prospective students interested in pursuing a degree in the field of education.
“I enjoy pointing students in the right direction because I remember when I was a student,” says Ms. Scott.
Ms. Scott, a psychology major, began her employment at Augusta State in 1996 as a student assistant with WACG radio station and later moved to the Office of Development and Alumni Relations. After graduating in 2000, she began work at Community Mental Health of East Central Georgia, and then, the Augusta Metro Chamber of Commerce. When the position in the College of Education became available, she went straight from temporary to full-time employee.
“I came back to ASU doing some temporary work on campus. I temped in the dean’s office in the College of Education, and the rest is history,” says Ms. Scott.
“I like helping students and being a source of information in the College of Education,” she says.
When not working, Ms. Scott enjoys reading, writing, traveling short distances, and movies. She and her daughter often go to the movies together. Ms. Scott’s favorite actor is Denzel Washington, and she says that she fell in love with his performance in Malcolm X.
“I have watched that movie several times. I have seen all of his movies,” says Ms. Scott.
