For decades, China has networked with a number of American universities to learn more about Western education. In 2008, Augusta State University was able to contribute to these efforts when Dr. Ying Wang, associate professor in the Department of Mathematics and Computer Science, represented the university in Shanghai, China, at the first joint meeting of the American and Chinese Mathematical Societies.
Dr. Wang presented research she co-authored with Dr. Sam Robinson, chair of ASU’s Department of Mathematics and Computer Science, titled Restrictions of Frames with Application to Quantum Mechanics.
More than 400 mathematicians from 20 different countries participated in the international conference. Although Dr. Wang had spoken at several international conferences before, this was the first time that the American and Chinese Mathematical Societies had held a joint meeting. “When I submitted the abstract, I was honored to know that it was accepted,” says Dr. Wang. “I am very pleased to have represented the university at such an event.”
Dr. Samuel Sullivan, vice president for Academic Affairs, says it is strong research such as this that allows Augusta State to not only become a better institution, but be recognized on an international platform. “Dr. Wang is an outstanding mathematician who is deserving of many accolades,” he says, adding, “We always try to support our faculty, because the effort that goes into quality research will be very helpful to both the faculty and students.”
Dr. Wang received a bachelor’s degree in mathematics from the Tianjin Technical University in China. She earned her master’s degree in mathematics from Eastern New Mexico University and her doctoral degree from New Mexico State University. She joined Augusta State in 2004.
