Dr. Jana Sandarg, professor of Spanish in the Department of English and Foreign Languages, has been honored with a national award for teaching excellence and dedication to foreign language education.
She was recognized by the American Council on the Teaching of Foreign Languages with the prestigious Steiner Award for Leadership in Foreign Language Education, Postsecondary. Dr. Sandarg was honored at the 2008 Annual Convention and World Languages Expo, which was held in November in Orlando, Fla. The award recognizes Dr. Sandarg for her outstanding leadership and expertise as a teacher and scholar. She has presented over 70 papers and 100 lectures at the local, state, regional, and national levels and has been published in national journals such as Hispania, the FLAG (Foreign Language Association of Georgia) Journal, and Dimension.
She has been cited numerous times in her 30 years as an educator for her dedication to the instruction of foreign languages and to the professional development of foreign language instructors. Her most recent honor, prior to the national award, was being named recipient of the Post-Secondary World Languages Teacher of Excellence Award at the 2008 Southern Conference on Language Teaching.
In 2006, Dr. Sandarg was recognized by the Georgia Consortium of International Studies with its award that recognizes faculty members who have made significant contributions to internationalization at their university or elsewhere. She also was previously named the National Professor of the Year by both the American Association of Teachers of Spanish and Portuguese (AATSP) and the AATSP-Georgia. She also received the Foreign Languages Association of Georgia’s Leadership in Foreign Languages Award.
Dr. Sandarg has served as a member of the American Association of Teachers of Spanish and Portuguese, Modern Language Association, and several other professional organizations. She is the past president of the Foreign Language Association for International Rapport (FLAIR).
She has directed the University System of Georgia’s Study Abroad program to Spain for over two decades. Dr. Sandarg has served on a number of university committees and was awarded the Outstanding Teaching Award in 2006.
Active in the community, she also served on the local Girl Scout Council for many years and was recognized by the Council for her service as president.
She earned bachelor, master, and doctoral degrees from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.
