Staff Profile – Officer John Pritchett

By Tamara Cammack, contributing writer

Public safety officer John Pritchett took a vow to protect, increase safety, and promote positive relations among constituents when he joined ASU’s Department of Public Safety.  “My job is to monitor the safety and security for students, faculty, and staff at ASU and University Village,” says Officer Pritchett.

Although ASU’s public safety officers are certified by the state of Georgia to carry weapons and have full arrest powers, Officer Pritchett has never had to make an arrest. “I’ve never had to arrest anyone on campus, but I did have to detain a suspect on campus until a probation fine was paid,” he says.

The Danville, Va., native has been working at ASU for the past four years, and prior to that, he worked with teens at the Youth Development Center in Augusta for 12 years.

He continues to work with youths as a coach at the Family Y.  He will be coaching his 6-year-old’s football team this season and previously served as assistant coach for his 4-year-old son’s soccer team. “We were in first place for the season, but lost the tournament,” says Officer Pritchett.

He enjoys playing sports with his three sons, Johnathan, 9, Christopher, 6, and Nathaniel, 4, and spending his free time with his family, which includes the newest addition to the Pritchett family, 14-month-old daughter, Brittany. His wife, Karen, is a registered nurse at the Medical College of Georgia.

Officer Pritchett is a member of Good Shepherd Baptist Church and sings in the male choir. “I enjoy singing during my free time, and I enjoy singing for the church,” he says.
