International affairs, the sciences, contemporary art, and politics are just a few of the topics to be discussed as part of the Saturday Semester Lecture Series being offered by ASU’s Continuing Education Division.
The second program in the series will be held on Saturday, Nov. 22, from 9 a.m.-2:15 p.m. in 170 University Hall with presentations from Dr. Sudha Ratan, The Two Faces of Terrorism Today; Dr. Christopher Sligar, The History, Beauty and Usefulness of Conic Sections; and Mr. Rick Davis, All the World’s a Stage. A question and conversation session will immediately follow each presentation.
Dr. J. Quentin Kuyper, program coordinator of the Saturday Semester series, describes it as an opportunity for the community as well as members of the university to learn from the expertise available on campus.
“There are many outstanding researchers on this campus who are very good at teaching others about the subjects that have always fascinated them. They can present overviews of their fields in ways that will enlighten listeners about subjects that they may never have considered before,” says Dr. Kuyper.
The cost for each program is $59, which includes three presentations and refreshments. ASU students with a valid JagCard may attend for only $19. For $8, lunch may be ordered and conversations with the presenters may be continued over the noon hour.
ASU’s third installment of Saturday Semester is planned for March 21, 2009. Guest speakers will include Dr. Todd Hoffman, American Mythology: The Western as a Fiction Icon; Dr. Michael Schwartz, The Expanded Conditions of Contemporary Art; and Dr. Heather Abdelnur, Thou Shalt Not Steal: Thievery, Evasion, and Incarceration in Late Colonial Latin America. Plans are underway for a similar set of Saturday Semesters in the next academic year.
