Faculty Profile – Jeanine Burse

By Tiara Jackson, contributing writer

New Orleans memorabilia is sprinkled among the stacks of books in Dr. Jeanine Burse’s office—reminders of her life before Hurricane Katrina.  After the hurricane’s horrific devastation, Dr. Burse knew that New Orleans would never again be home for her.  She also knew, because of her strong family ties, that she wanted to live in the Southeast.

In her search for a new home, she interviewed at Augusta State to become an assistant professor of biology. When offered the position, because of the hospitality the faculty extended to her, she chose Augusta as her home.

Although Augusta has much to offer in terms of food, Dr. Burse misses some of her favorite New Orleans specialties, such as boiled crawfish, stuffed peppers, and étouffée.

A huge New Orleans Saints fan, she follows them closely on television. “I was born and will die a New Orleans Saints fan no matter what their record is,” she says.

She also is a self-proclaimed reality television junkie. On any Sunday afternoon, she will be in front of the television enjoying reality television that she has recorded during the week.

When she is not watching television, teaching, or preparing lectures, she is spending time with her seven-year-old son, Riley, or traveling to Atlanta.

She has a passion for teaching, which is evident when she talks about her classes and students.

“Classes where the students are interested in learning and the teaching material is interesting makes for the most enjoyable classes,” she says.

Dr. Burse most often teaches zoology, but she also enjoys teaching endocrinology. She received a bachelor’s degree from Xavier University, and master’s and doctoral degrees from Tulane University.
