The Perilous State of Tenure in the Academy is the theme of two free programs in November hosted by Augusta State University’s chapter of the American Association of University Professors (AAUP). The first program will be held on Thursday, Nov. 6, at 2:30 p.m. in 170 University Hall.

The keynote address, titled The Lived Experience of Temporary Status in Academia, will be presented by Dr. Michael Katovich, a sociology professor at Texas Christian University. An active researcher, Dr. Katovich has published numerous book reviews and papers, including three papers co-authored with ASU’s professor of sociology Bill Reese, which appeared in the Sociological Quarterly and Studies in Symbolic Interaction. Dr. Katovich also is co-editor of two books on studies in symbolic interaction. He is a graduate of the University of Illinois as well as the University of Iowa, where he earned a master’s degree in sociology and a doctoral degree in social psychology.

Dr. Raymond Whiting, special assistant to the president and a political science professor at ASU, will also be on the Nov. 6 program. He will provide commentary on The Loss of Tenure in Academia, the University System of Georgia, and ASU.  Dr. Whiting holds a bachelor’s, a juris doctorate, and a doctoral degree from Syracuse University.

The discussion on tenure will continue on Thursday, Nov. 20, in 170 University Hall.

Among the AAUP’s goals are the defense of academic freedom, tenure and collegial governance, and the critical role higher education plays in our society.
