In its first fall meeting on Sept. 9, the Faculty Policies Committee approved a recommendation from faculty in the Hull College of Business to name the accountancy program in honor of the Knox Family and Foundation, thereby establishing the Knox School of Accountancy within the Hull College.
“The Knox family has been a stalwart in the business community. We are extremely proud that they have allowed ASU to use their name in association with our university,” said Dr. Marc Miller, dean of the Hull College.
The committee has also recommended, on behalf of Hull College faculty, that a Peter S. Knox III Endowed Chair of Accounting be approved. That request is now before the University System of Georgia Board of Regents, which must approve all endowed chairs. It is expected that a candidate for the endowed chair will be in place by fall 2009.
The Knox Foundation gave a major gift of $2 million in May to support the accountancy program in the Hull College. When making the gift to ASU, Mr. Jeff Knox, executive director of the Knox Foundation, said, “On behalf of all the trustees of the Knox Foundation, we are pleased to provide this financial support and to be part of the tremendous growth and momentum that Augusta State University is currently experiencing. It is our hope that this endowment for a school of accountancy will greatly enhance the business college’s ability to attract quality students as well as other private funding.”
Accounting is considered to be a cornerstone of a world-class business school, according to Dr. Miller, who said that the Knox gift will help the college become a top tier business college. The Hull College, one of only 300 business colleges worldwide to hold accreditation from the AACSB—The Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business, was named by The Princeton Review to be among the top 270 business schools in the nation.
Both the Knox Foundation and James M. Hull, for whom the Hull College of Business is named, are well known for their philanthropic efforts in the community and state. Mr. Hull said that the Knox Foundation’s broad knowledge and keen insight into the philanthropic landscape in Augusta is second to none.
