Augusta State’s first art exhibition of fall semester will feature nearly 40 works by artists in the Clay Artists of the Southeast (CASE) and their invited artists. The exhibit, Inviting the Stars-An Exhibition of Local and National Ceramic Art, opens Thursday, Aug. 28, in the New Space Gallery in Washington Hall. Highlighting the exhibition, which runs through Oct. 2, will be a gallery reception on Sept. 18 from 5-7 p.m. in the Dome Room.
The exhibit includes art by Don Reitz, one of the most important and influential ceramic artists of this century. He will conduct a workshop on Sept. 27-28, which is being co-sponsored by the Westobou Festival.
Mr. Reitz received his Master of Fine Arts degree from New York State College of Ceramics at Alfred University and has pursued a lifelong investigation of salt and wood firing. A former professor at the University of Wisconsin–Madison, Mr. Reitz has 74 works on display in the Chazen Museum of Art in Wisconsin.
The exhibition, which is being sponsored by the Clay Artists of the Southeast, includes works by Carissa Doying, part-time instructor in ASU’s art department; Brian Fort of Fort Pottery; ASU student Heather Gaitonde; and ASU associate professor of art Priscilla Hollingsworth. Ms. Hollingsworth has displayed her work in numerous exhibitions throughout the country. Photographs of her art have been included in several books, among them Surface Decoration for Low-Fire Ceramics, The Ceramic Design Book: A Gallery of Contemporary Work, and The Best of Pottery. She received a Master of Fine Arts degree from Indiana University in Bloomington and a bachelor’s degree from Princeton University.
