In a brief ceremony during September, Dr. Mark Fissel, professor of history and the first president of ASU’s chapter of the American Association of University Professors, was presented with a plaque in recognition of his hard work and dedication by the incoming president, Dr. William Reese, professor of sociology.

“Mark was instrumental in forming the chapter and served as more than just president and outgoing president for AAUP,” says Dr. Reese. “Members of the chapter thought it was more than appropriate to recognize him for his service,” he adds.

Dr. Fissel served as the chapter’s president for three years, before passing the torch to Dr. Reese.

“Mark Fissel was one of the first prime movers to start the chapter on campus. The chapter started out with six to eight members and has grown to about 24 members. That’s about ten percent of the faculty,” says Jim Benedict, professor of mathematics and a charter member.

AAUP’s purpose is to advance academic freedom and shared governance, to define fundamental professional values and standards for higher education, and to ensure higher education’s contribution to the common good. The ASU chapter was chartered on Sept. 8, 2005.
